Looking for memory card recommendations for my new Nikon Z8. I'll be shooting a mix of high-res stills and 8K video, so I need something fast and reliable. What are you all using? Should I go with CFexpress Type B or stick with SD cards? Any specific brands or speeds you'd recommend? Also wondering about dual card setup strategies. Thanks in advance for any advice!

For the Z8, you've got two slots to work with: Slot 1 takes CFexpress Type B or XQD cards. Slot 2 takes SD cards (UHS-II).[2]

My top picks:

The CFexpress slot is where you want your primary storage since it's much faster than SD.

I'm actually in the exact same boat right now. Just picked up my Z8 and I've been staring at different specs for days because I'm honestly so paranoid about data corruption. It's one thing to lose a few stills, but losing a whole 8K video file because the card couldn't handle the heat or just gave up would be a total nightmare. I've been trying to figure out if the massive price jump for the industrial lines is actually worth it for peace of mind or if it's just marketing hype. Quick question though to help narrow it down for both of us—are you planning to run the SD card as a mirror backup while shooting 8K? And how long are your typical video clips? I'm curious if you're doing short bursts or long-form recording where sustained reliability becomes the biggest factor.

Been shooting with my Z8 for months now. I have also been using a Lexar Professional Gold series 1TB card and found it to work very well.

Honestly, for 8K video on the Z8, you basically need to focus on *sustained* write speeds rather than just the peak numbers on the box. I've had really good luck with the Delkin Devices Black CFexpress Type B lately—they're supposedly built to be industrial grade and I havent had any overheating issues during long bursts. Tbh, heat is the biggest killer of cards when youre shooting high-res video, right? Also, if you do a dual card setup for safety, just remember that the camera will slow down to the SD card's speed if you're mirroring everything. Id suggest using the SD slot just for overflow or small JPEGs if you dont want to bottle-neck the whole system, especially since CFexpress is just so much more reliable for the heavy lifting. Better to be safe than sorry with your data, you know?
