Hey everyone! I just got a Nikon Z8 and I'm looking for microphone recommendations for video work. I mainly shoot interviews and some outdoor documentary content. My budget is around $300-500. I've been considering the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus and Audio-Technica AT875R, but I'm definitely open to other good suggestions. What microphones have you really had good experiences with? I've been running mine for a few months now and tbh the internal preamps are actually pretty clean for a mirrorless, but you definitely need a proper mic to match that 10-bit or N-RAW footage. For your budget, you can get some serious pro-level gear without breaking the bank. Ive been through a bunch of setups for field work and basically found that for outdoor docs, you really need something with a tight pickup pattern and a good high-pass filter. Its super versatile because it can run on an internal AA battery, so you dont need a dedicated phantom power supply. The sound is much more natural than the Rode stuff imo.
* Deity S-Mic 2: If youre worried about humidity or rain during outdoor shoots, this thing is built like a tank and sounds very similar to a Sennheiser 416 but at half the price.
* DJI Mic 2: Idk if youve considered wireless, but for interviews, having a lav on the subject is usually better than a shotgun on the camera. The 32-bit float internal recording is a lifesaver if your levels clip. Honestly, if you go with an XLR mic like the Audio-Technica+AT875R&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Audio-Technica AT875R, just make sure you get a high-quality XLR to 3.5mm TRS cable. I definitely agree with shanicrenshaw68 regarding the quality of the internal preamps. It makes the search for the right external unit even more difficult because you dont want to bottleneck the camera's potential. Tbh I have been dealing with this exact same dilemma for the last two months and still haven't found a solution.
