Hey! Looking for Z-mount macro lens recommendations. Shooting mostly car details (badges, textures, etc.). Budget is around $1000. What's the sharpest option for the money?
Just catching up on the thread and honestly, I'm still kinda new to the Z-mount macro scene even though I've been shooting for years. One thing I've been really focused on lately is how the gear actually fits and feels, especially if you're leaning into tight spots for car interiors or engine bays. I've noticed a few compatibility and fitment things that might matter more than just raw sharpness: * Using the Nikon FTZ II Mount Adapter with older F-mount glass adds a good couple inches to the lens. It makes the whole setup feel really front-heavy, right?
* Some of the older third-party macros don't always play nice with the Z system's in-body stabilization or focus peaking, which can be a real headache if you're trying to be precise.
* A native lens like the Nikon Z MC 50mm f/2.8 is way smaller and easier to maneuver around a car door or dashboard compared to those massive 100mm options. Does anyone know if all the non-Nikon lenses support the full electronic aperture control on the newer Z bodies??? I'm always worried about losing those features when I'm not using native glass!!! Just something to think about before you drop the cash.
Re: "Just catching up on the thread and honestly,..." - people have made some really solid points about the 105mm and those Laowa options already. It basically boils down to whether you want the native Nikon experience or if you're cool with manual focus to save some cash. Since you're shooting car details, space is gonna be a factor. Everyone talks about the big glass, but the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8 is a sleeper hit for tight spots. Its tiny compared to the 105mm, which is a lifesaver if you're cramped in an interior or trying to get a badge angle near a door panel. Plus, using native Z glass means you dont have to worry about the fitment issues or slower AF some people mentioned with adapted glass.
Unfortunately, the Nikon 105mm Z macro wasn't as sharp as expected. Consider the Laowa 90mm instead.
Consider extending your budget slightly for the Nikon 105mm Z. Super sharp, 1:1, VR works great.
Skip the Z-mount macro for now! Extension tubes ($100) on your existing lens can deliver amazing close-ups!
Hey! Check the Laowa 100mm. Be careful shooting low angles near traffic; use cones and bright clothing. Saw one go for $800 used.
Beyond Nikon, consider Sigma. Their macro lenses often outperform in sharpness tests, and used copies dip well below $1000. Check recent MTF charts before you buy!
Skip the lens. $100 macro rail and focus stacking software; sharper than expected results DIY!
