What are the best external flashes for Nikon Z series mirrorless cameras?

Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the jump from my old Nikon DSLR to the Z series (specifically the Z6II), and while I'm absolutely loving the mirrorless experience, I’m a bit stuck on the lighting side of things. I’ve been using an older SB-700, but I’ve noticed the red AF assist beam doesn't actually work with the Z bodies, which makes focusing in dark reception halls a bit of a challenge.

I’m looking for a solid external flash that balances well with the slightly smaller mirrorless form factor. I’ve looked at the Nikon SB-5000, but that price tag is a bit hard to swallow. Are there third-party options like Godox or Profoto that integrate seamlessly with the Nikon Z system’s i-TTL and High-Speed Sync (HSS)? I've also heard some rumors about firmware issues with older triggers on the newer Z mount sensors, so I'm a little nervous about buying the wrong thing.

I mainly shoot event photography and some environmental portraits, so reliability and fast recycle times are my top priorities. Does anyone have a favorite go-to flash that feels right on a Z6 or Z7? What are you all using for consistent exposure without adding too much bulk to the setup?

I was in a similar spot when I first got my Z camera and was terrified about the beam thing lol. Seconding the recommendation above! I ended up grabbing the Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon and its been GREAT. It costs way less than Nikon gear—around $230. The lithium battery is a total game changer! If u want cheaper, maybe check out the Godox TT685II-N Thinklite TTL Flash for like $130? No complaints so far!

Oh man, I feel u on that AF assist beam struggle!! It is sooo annoying when the old DSLR gear doesnt play nice with the Z series. Basically, the Z bodies use a different sensor tech so those old red grids just dont work, and honestly, even the new flashes struggle with that on mirrorless.

In my experience, if the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight price is too high, you should highkey look at Godox. I have been using the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon on my Z6II and it balances pretty well for event work. The round head gives a realy nice soft falloff for portraits. If you want something more traditional, the Godox V860III-N TTL Flash for Nikon is a total beast for recycle times cuz of that Li-ion battery. No more swapping AAs mid-reception lol! Just make sure u update the firmware and they integrate perfectly with i-TTL. gl! 👍

yo, been shooting Nikon for a decade and honestly, the Z bodies changed the lighting game. For your situation, I would suggest looking at Godox. Their stuff integrates so well with i-TTL and HSS.

* Godox for the best value
* Profoto for absolute reliability

Mirrorless tech basically killed the old red AF grids, so just make sure u update the firmware on whatever trigger u get. it definately helps. gl!
