Which prime lens is best for portrait photography on Nikon D850?

Shooting my sisters wedding next month and need a killer portrait lens for my D850. Stuck between the Nikon 85mm 1.4G and that huge Sigma 105mm 1.4 bokeh beast. Sigma is heavy but the Nikon is older.

Budget is 1200 used, which one is better for a long day?

The Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G is unfortunately a letdown on the D850. It shows way too much purple fringing and the AF is pretty sluggish for moving targets. While the Sigma 105mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is sharp, it's a literal brick for a full wedding day.

  • Nikon has dated AF motors
  • Sigma causes massive wrist fatigue
  • D850 sensor is too demanding for older optics I'd honestly recommend the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art instead. It's the best balance for that budget.

Quickly jumping in here since I went through the exact same headache with my D850 a while back. I spent big on the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G expecting perfection, but unfortunately, it just didnt hold up. The micro-contrast was pretty weak compared to what that 45MP sensor can actually pull. It is a bummer when you spend that much and the glass feels dated... the resolution just isnt there for modern bodies. Honestly, Id skip those and look for a used Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD Nikon F. I know its only f/1.8, but it has built-in stabilization which is a lifesaver when youre exhausted at the end of a long day. Plus, you can find them for around 450 bucks used. If you really need that f/1.4 speed, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Nikon F is way more manageable than that 105mm brick and fits your budget. Dont overspend just to be disappointed by soft corners.

  • Honestly, if weight is a worry for a long wedding, Ive been super happy with the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD. Having stabilization is a total lifesaver when youre tired. Another great practical choice is the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G. Its way lighter than those heavy 1.4 beasts and still plenty sharp for the D850 sensor. Save your back and some cash!
