I’ve been using my Nikon D7500 kit lens for a while now, but I’m really looking to step up my portrait game. I’m craving that creamy, blurred bokeh that prime lenses are famous for, but I’m a bit stuck on which focal length to choose. I’ve been eyeing the AF-S 50mm f/1.8G and the 85mm f/1.8G, but I'm worried the 85mm might be a bit too tight for indoor sessions since I'm on a DX sensor. My budget is around $500, and I mainly do outdoor headshots and family sessions. Which of these would you recommend for the sharpest results, or is there another hidden gem I should look at?
For your situation, keep in mind that DX sensors have a 1.5x crop factor. This basically means a 50mm lens acts like a 75mm on your D7500, which really matters for your working distance. * Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G (~$200) - Great for indoor versatility
* Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G (~$480) - Sharper but very tight indoors Honestly, start with the 50mm. It’s safer and saves tons of cash. gl!
Seconding the recommendation above! Honestly, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G is amazing value. That 75mm focal length equivalent is literally the sweet spot for portraits on ur DX body... super sharp!
Sooo, I used a longer prime for years—it was AMAZING for outdoor bokeh, but basically impossible in small rooms!! TL;DR: The shorter one or a wide zoom is better for versatility.
