My old SB-700 just bit the dust during a family shoot today and I'm honestly panicking because I have a huge wedding coming up next weekend in Jersey. I can't afford a brand new SB-5000 right now since my budget is capped at like $250 or $300 max. I tried some cheap knockoff brand from Amazon but the recycle time is absolute garbage and it keeps overheating after like five shots. It's so frustrating missing the key moments because my gear won't keep up. Does anyone know which speedlights actually play nice with Nikon's i-TTL system without breaking the bank? I need something reliable that wont overheat during a long reception...
TL;DR: Grab a used Nikon SB-910 AF Speedlight or the Nissin Di700A Flash for Nikon. In my experience, used pro gear beats new budget stuff every time. The SB-910 is a tank and handles heat way better than your old SB-700. If you want something brand new, the Nissin Di700A Flash for Nikon is a solid workhorse. It wont flake out on you mid-reception like those cheap generic units do.
Caught this a day late but wanted to jump in. Quick question though... are you married to using AA batteries or would you consider switching to a lithium ion pack? I picked up a Yongnuo YN968N II TTL Speedlite for Nikon years ago when my gear bag was light on cash. It handles the i-TTL communication surprisingly well for a budget unit and has never overheated on me during long receptions.
Godox is the way to go if you need reliability for a wedding without the OEM price tag. A similar panic hit me years ago when my gear failed right before a big event. I switched to their Li-ion system and the performance is basically identical to high-end Nikon units. The 1.5s recycle time is much more consistent than the SB-700 because of the 7.2V lithium batteries. You dont have to fumble with AA packs in the dark anymore...
