I’m looking to upgrade my gear for an upcoming trip to the Rockies. I shoot with a Nikon D850 and need something with incredible edge-to-edge sharpness for those vast vistas. I'm torn between a versatile zoom or a fast prime. For those shooting Nikon, what’s your go-to wide-angle lens that balances weight and image quality?
Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR is my pick:
* Way cheaper than primes
* Takes normal filters
Basically save ur cash for the Rockies... is weight a big deal for u? gl
Check out DxOMark for lab tests since that D850 sensor is so picky. tbh, the Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon F is the best value for edge-to-edge sharpness—it’s heavy, but way cheaper than flagship Nikon glass. If weight is a huge deal tho, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED is a gem and super light. gl!
oh man, picking glass for a Nikon D850 is honestly kinda stressful cuz that 45.7MP sensor is so high-res... it literally shows every little flaw. i'm still kinda new to the technical side of things but i’ve been reading a ton about corner softness and optics lately. basically, if you want that perfect edge-to-edge sharpness for those Rockies vistas, you gotta be careful with some older zooms that might struggle on such a big sensor.
here is what i think you should consider:
* Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 20mm f/1.8G ED - this is probably your best bet for weight. it's a prime, so it's super sharp and way lighter to carry up a mountain than a pro zoom.
* Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD G2 for Nikon F - i've heard this is actually sharper than the first-party stuff in the corners, but it's a total brick. literally SO heavy.
i would suggest the 20mm prime maybe? it takes standard filters too which is safer. just be careful with the focal length—20mm is wide, but maybe not wide enough for some spots?? good luck tho!! 👍
