I really want to get into photography because my sister is always taking these amazing photos of her kids and I feel like my old iPhone 12 just isnt cutting it anymore especially since I'm planning this huge trip to Japan in late 2026 and I want to actually have nice prints to hang up. I keep hearing about mirrorless cameras and how they're better than the big bulky ones but honestly I have no idea what that even means or how it works. Someone told me to wait for Amazon Prime Day to get a good deal but since the 2026 one is on the horizon I'm getting kinda stressed trying to figure out what to look for.
I have about $800 saved up maybe a bit more if I skip some nights out but is that even enough for a decent setup? I see names like Sony and Canon and Fujifilm and it's all just numbers and letters to me like a7iii or z50 or whatever and my head is spinning. Do they usually have big sales on the newer ones or is it just the old stuff they're trying to get rid of? I'm really worried about buying something and then realizing I need to spend another $500 on a lens or something I didnt know about. Does anyone know which specific models usually go on sale or what I should keep an eye on for Prime Day? Sorry if this is a total beginner question I just dont want to waste my money on something I cant even figure out how to turn on lol...

Seriously, you can get a killer setup for under 800! The Sony Alpha a6400 24.2MP with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens is legendary for its autofocus, perfect for chasing kids around. But for your Japan trip, I love the Canon EOS R50 24.2MP with RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens because the menus are so much easier to learn. Both usually see huge Prime Day discounts!

To add to the point above, you really gotta be careful about the total cost of ownership. Prime Day is great for deals, but you need to double check if youre buying a kit or just the camera body. If the price looks insane, its probably just the body and youll be stuck with a paperweight till you buy a lens. Quick question—whats your main focus for the Japan trip? Are we talking sweeping mountains or more city street vibes? That dictates which lens you should prioritize for that budget. Keep an eye on these specifically:
