Prime day is literally tomorrow and im stressing out trying to pick a camera before the deals expire. I have this huge trip to Japan coming up in three weeks and I really want to upgrade from my iPhone 14 for photos and some light vlogging. My budget is capped at $700 max because I still need to buy extra batteries and maybe a bag, but ideally I want to spend closer to $500 or $600.
Ive spent hours researching and I think I have it narrowed down to two main options that are currently discounted for Prime Day, but I just cant decide which way to go.
Option A: The Sony ZV-E10. Its on sale for $598 with the 16-50mm kit lens. People say the autofocus is amazing which is great because I want to do some quick street shots and video while walking. But I heard it doesnt have a viewfinder which kinda worries me because of glare when shooting outdoors in bright sunlight.
Option B: The Canon EOS R50. This one is down to $579 with the kit lens. It actually has a viewfinder and apparently the colors straight out of the camera are better, which would save me time on editing. But I read that Canon RF-S lenses are super limited and expensive compared to Sonys huge selection of third-party lenses.
Here is what I need it for:
- Travel photos of landscapes and temples in Tokyo and Kyoto
- Quick video clips for my travel vlog (nothing professional, just family stuff)
- Lightweight enough to carry in a small backpack all day
- Easy to use for a complete beginner
Im really torn because the Sony ecosystem seems better for upgrading later, but the Canon seems easier to use right out of the box and has that viewfinder. If you had to pick one of these deals right now, which one is the better buy? Or is there another sleeper deal I missed? I need to check out before the sale ends tomorrow night...

Go for the Sony ZV-E10 with 16-50mm Lens! I absolutely love mine and the cheap third-party lenses will save you so much cash down the road. Perfect for Japan!

^ This. Also, will you shoot mostly in direct sun? Be careful with glare.
- Sony ZV-E10 16-50mm: no viewfinder, cheaper setup
- Canon EOS R50 18-45mm: has viewfinder, expensive lenses

To add to the point above, I think the Sony is definitely the smarter play here. IIRC, it has way better battery life stats, which is huge for a long day walking around Tokyo. Not 100% sure, but I think the Canon battery capacity is pretty tiny in comparison. In my experience, shooting without a viewfinder is weird at first, but you get used to it fast.
