Im torn between the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and a cheaper Insta360 setup for my Tokyo trip this August. Leaning towards the Pocket 3 but my budget is max $400. Do you think the Pocket 3 will actually go on sale this Prime Day or does DJI rarely discount them?

To add to the point above: everyone is right about DJI not budging on price. I went through this exact dilemma for a trip to Japan last year and had to look at other gear to stay under budget. Heres how my experience went:

  • DJI Pocket 2 Creator Combo
  • I grabbed this instead and honestly have no complaints. It works well for quick vlogging, audio is solid, and it easily fits the 400 budget now. I was very happy with the daytime footage.
  • Insta360 X3 360 Action Camera
  • My travel buddy used this one. Its amazing for crowded Tokyo streets since you dont have to aim it, but the low light performance kinda sucked. If you want to save cash and still get that gimbal look, the older Pocket combo is the way to go.

Honestly, getting the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 4K Gimbal Camera down to $400 for Prime Day feels like a bit of a stretch. DJI is pretty stingy with price cuts on their top-tier gear, usually they just throw in a free battery or a tiny 5 percent discount if youre lucky. Ive been tracking their sales for a while and they really hold their value. You might want to consider a few things before you commit your whole budget to the camera body alone:

  • Be careful with the extra costs because youll definitely need a fast card like the SanDisk Extreme Pro 256GB microSDXC which adds another $30 to the total.
  • Make sure to look at the Insta360 X3 Pocket 360 Action Camera as a backup if the price doesnt drop, since that brand usually goes on much deeper sales for Prime Day.
  • I would suggest checking the Amazon Warehouse section during the sale too, sometimes you can snag a like new return for way cheaper. I used a gimbal setup in Tokyo last year and it was incredible for those smooth cinematic shots at the shrines, but just be careful because the Pocket 3 is kinda delicate compared to an action cam. If youre navigating the heavy crowds in Shibuya, you really gotta watch that gimbal head so it doesnt get bumped. If you can stretch the budget or find a bundle, its totally worth it for the night shots in Shinjuku tho. Let me know if you need more advice on accessories for the trip!

Regarding what #1 said about DJI being stingy, unfortunately thats been my experience too. I hoped for a price drop last year but it was not as good as expected. Not sure but I think camelcamelcamel is your best bet to check price trends. Or maybe look into renting from ShareGrid for Tokyo? Might fit your budget better.
