So I have this trip to Italy coming up in like three weeks and I am honestly losing my mind trying to find a camera. My budget is strictly $400 because I already spent way too much on flights and hotels in Rome and Florence and I really cant go over that. I thought it would be easy to just find a small camera but everything I look at on Amazon or Best Buy is either $1000 or looks like a toy from 2005.

My logic was that I should get something better than my phone because my iPhone 11 battery is basically dead after two hours of using Google Maps and taking photos and the zoom is just blurry garbage. But then I go on these websites and everyone is talking about f-stops and crop factors and I literally have no idea what any of that means. Sorry if this is a dumb question but like... does a $400 camera even exist anymore that actually takes good pictures? Or am I just wasting my time?

I looked at some Sony ones like the RX100 but apparently the ones in my price range are really old? Like the Mark 1 or something? Is it even worth buying something that old? Then I saw some point and shoot things from Canon like the Elph but people say those are worse than phones now. I'm so frustrated because I just want to capture the architecture and maybe some nice shots of the coast without carrying a giant brick around my neck.

I basically have a few things I'm looking for:

  • tiny enough for a jacket pocket
  • better zoom than a phone
  • doesnt cost more than 400 bucks
  • easy to use for someone who knows nothing

Is there a specific brand I should be looking at or should I just give up and buy a portable power bank for my phone and call it a day? I dont want to be that person who gets home and all my vacation photos are grainy and dark because I didnt know what I was doing. If anyone can explain this to me like I'm five years old I would really appreciate it because right now I'm just staring at a dozen open browser tabs and feeling really stupid...

You absolutely dont need to give up! Italy is going to be amazing and you definitely want better photos than an old iPhone can give. Honestly, for $400, your best bet is looking at the used or refurbished market because brand new gear is way overpriced right now... I love the older Sony RX100 series for this! It fits in a pocket, has a huge sensor, and the zoom is fantastic compared to a phone. Here are my top picks that wont break the bank:

Re: "You absolutely dont need to give up! Italy..." - ngl, the $400 market is tricky since phones are so good now. To actually beat an iPhone, you need a 1-inch sensor. It's a larger sensor that catches way more light, which stops the grainy look in your photos.

Any updates on this?

Over the years, I've learned that the most expensive camera is the one that fails you mid-trip or produces blurry memories. When I first started traveling to places like Rome, I tried to save money with cheap point-and-shoots, and I regretted it every time the lighting got tricky. In my experience, the reliability of the older Sony RX100 or Canon G7X lines is far superior to anything new you will find at that $400 price point today. The technical reason comes down to the sensor size, basically. Most cheap cameras use a tiny sensor, which is no better than your phone. You're paying for a lens but getting phone-quality guts. A premium compact uses a 1-inch sensor. It's significantly larger, which provides the dynamic range needed for those bright Italian streets and dark shadows. I always tell people to prioritize a used prosumer model over a brand-new toy. It might feel weird buying a 6-year-old camera, but the internal components were built to a much higher standard. Just get it from a site with a warranty... honesty is key when spending your hard-earned travel cash.
