What's the best all-around travel lens for the R7 that actually holds up to that 32.5MP sensor? I've been shooting Canon for years and finally ditched my old 90D for the R7 mirrorless body but I'm struggling with the lens situation. I picked up the 18-150mm kit lens thinking it would be the perfect one lens solution for my upcoming trip to Japan this October, but after taking it out for a few test runs at a local festival, I'm just not feeling it. The images look a bit mushy when I zoom in, and that f/6.3 at the long end is a nightmare once the sun starts going down.

I'm looking for something versatile because I'm gonna be doing a mix of street photography in Tokyo and then heading out to Hakone for some landscapes and temple shots. I really want to avoid swapping lenses every five minutes while I'm traveling with my family. My budget is probably around $1000, maybe a bit more if it's really worth it. Should I just get the RF 24-105mm f4L even though I'll lose some of the wide end on the crop sensor? Or is there a hidden gem I'm missing? I know about the EF adapter too but I was hoping to keep the setup compact if possible...

I've used the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM before. The 38mm equivalent field of view is way too narrow for Tokyo alleys, though it's much sharper on that 32.5MP sensor.

^ This. Also, Canons RF-S glass is unfortunately mediocre right now tbh.

I totally get the frustration with that kit lens. I took a similar setup on a trip last year and basically every evening shot was a noisy mess because the aperture was so narrow. The R7 sensor is just so demanding tbh. I would suggest being really careful with the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM idea though. I tried that path and found that 24mm on a crop sensor is way too tight for those narrow Tokyo streets. It feels like you are constantly backing into walls just to get a whole building in the frame. You might want to consider these instead:

  • Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Canon RF
  • This thing is a total gem. It is tiny, sharp enough for the 32.5MP sensor, and that f/2.8 is a lifesaver once the sun goes down.
  • Canon RF 15-30mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM
  • Good for landscapes in Hakone, but you will still struggle in low light. Just make sure to check if you really need the long reach before you commit. That Sigma stays on my camera 90% of the time now because it is just so much easier to carry around all day.

Building on the earlier suggestion, that Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 is seriously the best move for the R7! Its a total game changer because you finally get that constant f/2.8 aperture which is fantastic for low light in those Tokyo alleys! Relying on variable aperture lenses for a major trip is honestly risky business when you want guaranteed results. Quick tips for your Japan trip:

  • Stick with the Sigma for 90% of your shots, the reliability is amazing.
  • Keep your 18-150mm in the bag ONLY for daytime landscapes in Hakone where you need the reach.
  • Grab a high-speed UHS-II card so you dont bottleneck that beefy 32MP sensor. You wont regret going with a lens that stays sharp across the whole range... it makes a world of difference for your peace of mind!
