Im heading to Switzerland in two weeks and really need to nail down a single lens setup for my R6. I want to keep it simple with just one zoom since were doing a lot of hiking. I looked at the RF 24-105mm f/4L because everyone says its the gold standard but I'm worried 105mm wont be enough for those distant mountain peaks.
Then I saw the 24-240mm which seems perfect for range but some reviews say the distortion is crazy and it might be too heavy for a 10-mile day. Budget is around $1200 max. Which one actually holds up better for landscape and the occasional wildlife?
@Reply #2 - good point! Basically range vs weight.
I've spent a decade chasing light across mountain ranges, and honestly, the single lens dilemma is something I've wrestled with on every single trip. For Switzerland, you definitely want the extra reach. I carried the Canon RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM through the Rockies once and felt totally crippled whenever a hawk or a distant ridge line caught my eye. 105mm just isnt enough for the Alps. You should grab the Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM. People moan about the barrel distortion at the wide end, but they're forgetting that modern mirrorless systems are built for computational correction. Once the lens profile hits your raw file, those curved lines basically vanish. In my experience, the versatility outweighs the slight loss in corner sharpness. Heres why it holds up for those long treks:
