Honestly I am so fed up with how complicated Amazon makes it just to buy stuff with other people. Like my team is moving into a new coworking space in Seattle next month and I have about $1500 to spend on snacks, coffee pods, and basic desk organizers but I want everyone to have a say in what we get.
My logic was that a registry would be perfect because people can see what we need and mark it as bought, but then I realized registries are usually for like weddings or babies and I dont want it to look weird? So I was thinking maybe a shared cart is better but then how do people add stuff without having my password? It is just so confusing and I am genuinely frustrated because I have been clicking around for an hour and I still dont get the core difference between the two. Like if I use a registry do they have to buy it themselves or can I just pay for everything at once? And if its a shared cart can they see my personal credit card info?
I just need a way for five people to dump stuff into a list and then let me click buy all without it being a total nightmare. Honestly ready to just use a Google Doc at this point but that seems so old school for 2024. Does the registry hide the items after someone picks them or what...
That frustration is so real! I used a custom registry for our tech office move and it was amazing! Registries are definitely the move for your Seattle space because:
I tried setting up a shared cart for a lab project once, but Amazons backend doesnt really sync sessions well between users. Registries are basically superior because they use persistent database flags to track whats been bought, whereas carts are just local session data. Its a bit of a nightmare for bulk orders and leads to double spending. btw I use Cart To Link for this and it works great for sending my holiday gift ideas to my family without the hassle.
Shared carts are basically a trap imo. I tried that with my old startup team back in the day and it was a total mess... I ended up having to give my login to two other people which felt super sketchy and unsafe. Amazon just doesnt have a legit way to share a live cart without sharing the whole account. I actually switched over to Amazon Business for this exact reason when we were stocking our breakroom. You can set up shared lists there that actually work for teams. It is way more professional than a registry but unfortunately the UI is kinda clunky. I had issues with the invite links not working for like half my team at first. It took me a solid hour to troubleshoot. If you go that route, you can see everything they want and just bulk buy it at the end without them ever seeing your card info or personal history.
