I just got this crazy expensive Fuji X-T5 for my trip to Tokyo in like two weeks and I'm honestly so overwhelmed. I have no idea what all these numbers on the lenses mean and I dont want to be swapping them out while I'm walking around the city. I just want one lens that can do the buildings and maybe some food pictures too. My budget is like $900 max after spending so much on the camera body. I'm really sorry if this is a stupid question but everything online is so technical and I just want something simple that works for everything. What is the best all around lens I should buy so I dont mess up my vacation photos?

Quick question tho, are you planning on shooting a lot at night or mostly during the day? Tokyo looks amazing after dark. To keep it under budget, you should definitely look at third-party glass since they're such a steal.

Man, the X-T5 is an absolute beast but honestly, finding the right lens for it without going broke is a total nightmare. Fujis standard all-in-one options left me pretty disappointed. The Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f4 R OIS WR was not as good as expected when I used it last year. It just isnt sharp enough for that 40-megapixel sensor you just paid for, and those soft corners are super annoying for architecture shots. Unfortunately, most pro lenses are heavy and way over your $900 budget. If you want something simple that actually works:

  • Grab the Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X. Its tiny, cheap, and that f2.8 aperture is a lifesaver for food photos in those cramped, dim ramen shops.
  • You could look at the Tamron 17-70mm f2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for Fuji X too. It has a great range, but I had issues with the size. Its huge and makes the camera feel front-heavy after walking 20k steps in Tokyo.
  • Stay away from the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f2.8-4 R LM OIS for this specific camera. It is a classic, but it honestly struggles to keep up with the X-T5 high-res sensor compared to newer glass. Tokyo is crowded and your neck will thank you if you keep the setup light. That Sigma lens is basically the perfect middle ground for your budget. Youll have plenty of cash left over for extra batteries and way too many 7-Eleven snacks... which you definitely need to photograph.
