I finally booked my dream trip to Tokyo next month and Im so hyped to take the a7IV out for a real spin. Usually Im a total prime snob and carry my 35mm GM everywhere but I realized that trying to swap lenses while hiking or on a packed train is gonna be a disaster.

I need a one-and-done setup that wont break my back or my bank account since I already spent a ton on flights. Budget is like $1300 max. Ive heard people swear by the Tamron 28-200 for the range but is the image quality actually gonna hold up on the 33MP sensor compared to something like the Sony 24-105 G? What are you guys using for a single lens travel kit?

Just saw this! Since you love your 35mm GM, you definitely want that f/2.8 speed for Tokyo night shots. Grab the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2! Its crazy sharp and I love how light it feels. Its usually around $900 so you'll save plenty for sushi. It fits your budget perfectly and wont kill your shoulder on the trains. Seriously, the rendering is fantastic!

I have been very satisfied with the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD on my a7IV. Even at 33MP, its resolving power holds up well, and the MTF charts show it outclasses the old 24-240mm easily. Quick tip: if you prioritize the wide end for Tokyo architecture, the Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G is a great alternative. It works well for tight streets and fits your budget. Lemme know if you need more data.

Saw this earlier but just getting home to reply! Honestly Tokyo is a total dream for photographers but those packed trains are no joke lol. Regarding what #1 said about "I have been very satisfied with the Tamron..."

  • I totally agree the Tamron 28-200mm f/2.8-5.6 Di III RXD is a beast, but since youre coming from that 35mm GM, you might want more sharpness on that 33MP sensor. Here are some killer options that stay under your $1300 budget:
  • Sony FE 20-70mm f/4 G
  • This is my favorite travel lens! Having 20mm ultra-wide is a total game changer for cramped Tokyo alleys and temples compared to a standard 24mm.
  • Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2
  • Super lightweight and the f/2.8 aperture is amazing for those neon night shots in Shinjuku.
  • Sigma 28-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Contemporary
  • Tiny, sharp, and super easy on the wallet. That 20-70mm is basically glued to my camera now. Have an amazing trip!

Saw this earlier but just getting around to it now... Tokyo is gonna be a blast. I brought my a7IV there last year and it was a dream. Since you want something reliable that wont fail you on a once-in-a-lifetime trip, here is what I think:

  • Go with the Sony G line of zooms. You basically cant go wrong with their native glass for autofocus reliability, which is huge when you are trying to snap quick shots in a crowded train station.
  • If you want something that feels really solid in the hand, look at the Sigma zoom options. They have that heavy-duty build quality that just feels like it can handle being bumped around a bit on the subway.
  • Just find a mid-range zoom from Tamron if you want to save weight. I have been super satisfied with how their newer stuff holds up after months of heavy use and the image quality is plenty for that sensor. Just make sure whatever you get has some decent weather sealing because those sudden rain showers are no joke tho. Have a killer time!
