What is the best all-in-one travel lens for the Fuji X-T5 because I'm finally going to Japan next month and I'm so pumped! I'm torn between the 18-135mm fuji or the Tamron 18-300mm. The Tamron has crazy reach but does the Fuji handle the 40mp sensor better? Budget is $800 max and I gotta stay lightweight for Tokyo...

I'm a bit late to the thread but I had a similar dilemma before my last Kyoto trip. I was so worried about missing the long reach that I almost grabbed a massive super-zoom, but a buddy warned me about how the 40mp sensor on the X-T5 shows every single flaw. I actually tried a heavier setup once and my neck was absolutely killing me after walking through Shinjuku all day. Be careful with that Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD because while the reach is fun, it can get a little soft at the long end. You might want to consider the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR if you want that constant f/4. Just a few things to watch out for:

  • verify if 18mm is wide enough for narrow Tokyo alleys
  • make sure you're okay with the Tamron's weight balance
  • consider how much the f/4 constant aperture matters for evening shots I would suggest sticking with Fuji glass just to be safe with that high-res sensor, tbh. I ended up really regretting my heavy zoom choice by day three and ended up leaving it in the hotel room...

Ive been shooting Fuji forever and honestly the Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is still my pick for Japan. It works well with the 40mp sensor and I have no complaints about the weight compared to that Tamron.

  • Weather sealing is legit for rainy days
  • Used copies are a total steal under $500
  • Perfect for all-day walking Grab one used and save your extra cash for sushi... ngl you wont regret it.

In my experience, walking 20k steps a day in Shinjuku makes every gram matter. Like someone mentioned, that 40mp sensor really shows lens flaws. I've used both and the Fujifilm XF 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR is the better play. It's lighter and sharper than the bulky Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A2 VC VXD. Grab a used copy so you dont blow your budget.
