So I'm honestly just so frustrated right now with my current setup because I spent a fortune on this Nikon Z8 and my old F-mount 14-24 with the adapter is just... its just not cutting it anymore. It feels so clunky and the corners look soft which is driving me insane since I'm heading to Glacier National Park in three weeks. My logic was to just keep using the old glass to save money but now im panicked everything is gonna look blurry. I have about $2300 saved up but i cant decide if I should get the Z 14-24mm f2.8 or if the 20mm prime is enough. I'm worried about missing shots if I dont have the zoom but I hate the weight. What are you guys actually using for high-res landscape stuff on this body?
Building on the earlier suggestion, you might want to consider the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S instead. Its way lighter and saves you like $1000 for the actual trip. Be careful with that f2.8 weight if youre hiking Glacier.
Stick with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S for maximum reliability. Zooms have more moving parts that can fail when youre out in the elements. This prime is surgical on the Z8 and uses simple 77mm filters, which is much safer for protecting your glass than those huge bulbous zoom fronts. Saving that extra $1300 for high-quality tripods or weather housing is the smarter move for Glacier.
Tbh I've shot with a lot of glass over the years and the Z mount changed everything. You should definitely go for the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S. The corner-to-corner sharpness on that Z8 sensor is honestly insane compared to the old F-mount stuff. In Glacier you're gonna want that zoom range because you cant always walk closer to the mountains... it's much lighter than your current setup anyway.
