What is actually the best macro lens for the Nikon Z system right now because im honestly so over my current setup. I have been using my old F-mount 105mm with the FTZ adapter on my Z6ii and it is just driving me nuts. The autofocus hunts constantly and it feels so front-heavy and awkward when im out in the woods trying to get shots of damp moss and tiny insects here in rainy Portland. Its just clunky and im tired of missing shots because the adapter decides to be finicky right when a beetle moves.

I have about a thousand dollars saved up for this and I really need something that just works natively without all the extra bulk. I was looking at the Z 105mm f2.8 VR S but then I saw people talking about the 50mm version and now im just confused. Is the 105mm worth the extra weight or is there a third party option like Viltrox or something that doesnt suck?

  • Need 1:1 magnification
  • Budget around $900-$1000
  • Must be native Z mount

I just want something sharp that wont make me want to throw my camera into a bush after an hour of hiking. Does the native glass actually make that much of a difference with the focus speed or am I just gonna have the same issues even without the adapter? I need to buy something before my trip to the coast next month...

TL;DR: Grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S. It fits your $1000 budget, fixes the balance, and native focus is way better than using that clunky adapter tho.

Unfortunately, the native macro lineup for Z mount is still pretty thin and honestly not as good as I expected it to be by this point. I really wanted to see more native competition from Sigma or Tamron to drive prices down. While the 105mm is usually the go-to recommendation, it actually has some noticeable focus breathing that might drive you crazy if you do any focus stacking for those moss shots.

  • Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 105mm f/2.8 VR S: It is the standard choice but it uses up your entire budget.
  • Nikon NIKKOR Z MC 50mm f/2.8: Much cheaper, but the working distance is way too short for skittish insects.
  • Laowa 100mm f/2.8 2X Ultra Macro APO Nikon Z: Incredible 2:1 magnification but the lack of AF really sucks for field work. Native glass is definitely faster than using that adapter, but dont expect miracles in low-light Portland forests. If you want to save a few bucks, maybe look for a refurbished copy of the 105mm S to stay well under that $1000 cap. Let me know if you need more data on the lens construction or diffraction limits...
