I'm looking to upgrade my audio setup for my mirrorless camera and feeling overwhelmed by all the options out there. Currently shooting with a Sony A7 IV for YouTube content and some client work. My budget is around $200-300. Should I go with a shotgun mic, lavalier system, or something else entirely? What brands and models have worked well for you? Any specific features I should prioritize?

Godox V1 or Godox V1 Pro is recommended.

I've been using the A7 IV for about a year now and honestly, the internal preamps are decent, but you gotta be careful not to push them too hard or you'll get that nasty hiss! I once filmed a whole sit-down interview with a cheap $50 shotgun mic and it was a total disaster because of the interference. Never again! Seriously, avoid those super cheap no-name wireless kits like the plague because they drop signal the second someone walks by.

  • Rode VideoMic NTG (that physical gain knob is a total lifesaver)
  • DJI Mic (super portable for YT stuff)
  • Sennheiser MKE 400 Technically speaking, you want something with low self-noise so you dont have to fix it in post. I found some amazing gear deals via Share Product recently that fit right in that $200-300 sweet spot. Just make sure whatever you pick has a safety channel feature... literally saved my butt last month when a client started shouting and clipped the main track! Love that peace of mind tho.
