Heading to Japan next month and I'm honestly panicking about which lens to bring for my a7iv. I saw the Tamron 28-75 G2 is great but then people say the 24-105 f4 is better for the extra reach.

My budget is strictly $1100 and I cant decide which way to go. What's the best versatile zoom for me?

In my experience, walking 20k steps a day in Tokyo makes lens weight your biggest enemy. If you want to save cash and your back, check out the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 DG DN Contemporary. Its super light and fits your budget easily. Quick tip: prioritize weight over range for travel. Are you planning to do more night street photography or mostly daytime landscapes?

I have tested both, and unfortunately, neither lived up to my expectations. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS was a major letdown in low light, while the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 felt a bit cheap and didnt feel durable.

  • Sony: Great range, but f/4 is too slow.
  • Tamron: Fast aperture, but build quality is lacking. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is a much better choice for your budget.
