What are the absolute top three accessories I need for my new Sony camera besides the lens? I just grabbed an a6400 for a trip to Japan next month and I am kinda overwhelmed by all the extra stuff people say you need. I saw a lot of people recommending Peak Design straps but then I also saw some folks saying the stock one is fine and the money is better spent on extra batteries since they die so fast. My budget is pretty tight after buying the body so I can only grab 3 things right now.

  • extra batteries
  • screen protector
  • carrying case

I dont want to waste cash on stuff thatll just sit in my bag...

Agree on those batteries, 1020mAh is tiny. Definitely grab a SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC V30 UHS-I card too so the a6400 can write that 100Mbps 4K video without lagging.

Building on the earlier suggestion, you definitely need a better way to carry that camera! Japan involves a ton of walking and the stock strap is honestly painful. I absolutely love Peak Design gear because they make swapping everything so fast... Plus, you should get:

  • a cleaning blower from Giottos
  • any wrist strap from Peak Design
  • a lens cloth from ZEISS Keeping your glass clean in those crowded streets is non negotiable! Its a total game changer for your trip.

To add to the point above: you really dont need to buy into the hype for everything. I have been shooting for years and some of my best gear is just DIY solutions. For example, skip the expensive rain covers and just keep a few heavy-duty freezer bags in your pocket. If it rains in Tokyo, poke a hole for the lens and use a rubber band. It works and costs basically nothing. If you have to buy three things, I would go with these:

  • Lexar Professional 1066x 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card is just as fast as the SanDisk options but usually hits a better price point.
  • Tenba Tools BYOB 7 Camera Insert is better than a dedicated camera bag. It fits in any backpack you already own, which is way more discreet for street photography.
  • SmallRig Cold Shoe Relocation Plate for A6400 because the stock ergonomics are a bit cramped. This plate shifts the mount so it doesnt block the screen. The stock strap is ugly but it wont break. Just use it for this trip and see if you actually hate it before dropping big money on a boutique strap. Save that cash for your travel budget instead.

Youre gonna have the best time in Japan! I love the a6400, it's fantastic. Since your budget is tight, skip the fancy straps for now. Grab the Wasabi Power NP-FW50 Battery 2-Pack with Dual USB Charger because youll totally need extras! Also, the PCTC Sony a6400 Tempered Glass Screen Protector 3-Pack is a must for scratches. For a case, the MegaGear Ultra Light Neoprene Camera Case for Sony a6400 is cheap and works perfectly!

Ive shot mirrorless for a decade and agree on the power drain.

  • Power banks are life-savers.
  • Mini tripods help. Third-party gear usually beats the overpriced brand-name stuff for travel.
