What are some cheap prime lenses for a Sony a6400 that wont break the bank? I just got this camera for my birthday and honestly I have no idea what I'm doing yet lol. People keep saying get a prime lens because they're better than the kit one but what does that even mean? I'm mostly taking pictures of my cat and sometimes my friends when we go out to eat so I need something that works well indoors. My budget is really tight like maybe $200 or $250 max since I spent all my savings on the actual camera body. Are there any brands that aren't Sony that work too? I'm so lost with all the numbers like 35mm or 50mm...

Checked some prices and third-party brands are the way to go. You get more for your money without sacrificing reliability. Couple tips for ya:

  • Stick to lenses with AF (autofocus) so you dont struggle with moving pets
  • Look for a 33mm or 35mm lens for a natural view The Viltrox AF 33mm f1.4 E Sony E-mount is a decent option that fits your budget perfectly. It should work well.

Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything said above is spot on.

You definitely want a wide aperture like f1.4 for those indoor shots. Primes dont zoom, but they are much sharper than kit lenses. I highly recommend the Sigma 30mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary Sony E. The 30mm focal length is much more versatile for friends and cats than a 50mm, which often feels way too zoomed in indoors. Its a great value lens that fits your budget.
