I’ve recently made the switch to the Sony Alpha system with an a7IV, and while I love the body, I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by the massive selection of E-mount glass. I’m primarily looking for prime lenses to capture street photography and some portraits of my family. I’ve been eyeing the 35mm and 85mm focal lengths, but I can't decide if I should save up for the high-end Sony G Master series or go with the more budget-friendly Sigma Art alternatives. I really value edge-to-edge sharpness and fast autofocus for those quick, candid moments. Does anyone have a favorite 'must-have' prime lens that rarely leaves your camera? I'd love to hear your recommendations!
Just sharing my experience: I compared Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,398) vs Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 ($648). I chose the 1.8 cuz its safer for you're budget and easier to carry maybe?
Before I give advice, are you gonna be shooting in rain or dusty spots? i've tried many over the years and honestly, the weather sealing of native glass like the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is just safer for that a7IV. * Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 - lighter and safer for your budget
* Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 - reallyyy solid, reliable AF Native is just more stable imo. Lemme know? peace
basically:
- Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art ($899)
- Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM ($1,398) Sigma's way cheaper, sharpness feels identical? best choice for ur a7IV, so happy!
> I’ve been eyeing the 35mm and 85mm focal lengths In my experience, the Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is AMAZING for street cuz the AF is literally flawless. But if ur worried about budget, I'd suggest the Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 as a safer, lighter alternative. It's highkey better for quick candids! For portraits, the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is fantastic, though it’s a bit heavy... just gotta be careful with that balance! gl!
Seconding the recommendation above! Watch out for slower AF on third-party brands cuz Sony's focus is *literally* faster for fam photos. TL;DR: go native so ur not gonna miss shots!
