I’m looking to upgrade from the stock Canon neck strap because my setup (full-frame body + a heavy telephoto) is starting to feel sketchy on long shoots. I’d love something more comfortable, secure, and quick to adjust—maybe sling vs. traditional? Any straps or attachment systems you trust for heavy lenses?
Oh man, i feel u… full-frame + heavy tele gets old FAST. For your situation, here’s what’s worked for me:
1) Sling w/ quick adjust: BlackRapid Sport Breathe Camera Sling
- Pros: super comfy, weight sits on shoulder/torso, quick to slide up to shoot
- Cons: it hangs at your hip (can bump stuff), and i prefer attaching via lens foot not the body
2) Traditional but comfy: Peak Design Slide Camera Strap + Peak Design Anchor Links
- Pros: quick length changes, works as neck/shoulder/sling, fast clip on/off
- Cons: with big glass, i’m always double-checking anchors… probably paranoia lol
3) Budget but solid: OP/TECH USA Pro Loop Strap
- Pros: cheap-ish, stretchy comfort, no complaints
- Cons: not as “slick” for quick adjustments
If your lens has a tripod collar, i’d seriously mount there. What tele are you running??
+1 to what was said earlier about NOT hanging a big tele off the body lugs. Been there… I had a 70-200 + gripped body on a “nice looking” strap, the lug hardware started backing out mid-event and I basically did the worlds least fun camera-catch. Never again lol.
If you want safety-first + comfy, a couple setups I trust for heavy glass:
- OP/TECH USA Utility Strap - Sling + their OP/TECH USA System Connectors - Uni-Loop (or Mini QD connectors if you prefer). Super underrated. Wide neoprene, stretches a bit to kill bounce, and the quick-disconnects are legit. Around $25–$45 depending on pieces.
- BlackRapid LOCKSTAR add-on (even if you go BlackRapid like others mentioned). It’s cheap insurance to keep the carabiner gate from getting bumped open. Like $10–$15.
- Really Right Stuff B2-FABN Clamp + a proper Arca foot on your lens collar (if you’re already in Arca land). That way your “attachment point” is a clamp + dovetail, not some mystery plate screw.
Also: whatever you buy, put a tiny drop of blue Loctite (242) on the screw threads you never want backing out, and do a quick “tug test” before every shoot. Seriously. gl!
For your situation, I’d go: A) lens-foot mount sling like BlackRapid Sport Left (RS-4) Camera Sling Strap → super stable w/ big tele, since the load’s on the lens collar not the body (use a real Arca foot). B) hiking-style harness like Cotton Carrier Skout G2 Sling-Style Camera Harness → best security, slower to bring up. C) traditional but padded like OP/TECH USA Super Classic Strap - Regular → comfy but still neck/shoulder load. gl!
Big warning: dont hang a heavy tele from the camera’s side lugs or a random cheap plate… that’s how stuff loosens and gets sketchy fast.
What I’d do (value-first):
- Mount the strap to the lens collar/foot, not the body (way safer)
- Add a safety tether as backup (cheap insurance)
- Check screw tightness like every break, seriously
- If you go sling, grab one with a wide pad + fast adjust so it doesn’t cut in
I’ve had a knockoff clip slip once… never again lol. What lens are you running?
+1 to the “mount to the lens foot + add a safety tether” advice above. That’s the whole game with heavy teles, honestly.
A few alternatives I’ve had good luck with (and how they kinda stack up):
- OP/TECH USA Super Classic Strap - Regular: cheap-ish, super comfy neoprene for long days, but it’s more “neck/shoulder” than true sling.
- Joby UltraFit Sling Strap: nice quick-adjust vibe, feels more modern, and doesn’t scream “I’m a pro photographer” lol.
- Sun-Sniper Rotaball Pro Sling Strap: pricier, but the built-in anti-cut strap + rotating connector is REALLY confidence-inspiring with big glass.
If you’re using a tripod collar, I’d 100% run the strap from that + a tiny backup tether to the body. What lens are you hanging exactly?
Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!
