I recently got the new Canon EOS R5 and I'm looking to add an external microphone to improve the audio quality for my videos. The internal mics are decent but I think a dedicated mic would take things to the next level.
I mostly shoot vlogs, interviews and some run-and-gun style videos. I need something that has good sound quality but is also compact and easy to use on the go with the R5.
What do you recommend as the best mic to pair with the Canon EOS R5?
For professional use, I suggests Sennheiser MKE 600 Shotgun Microphone. This microphone boasts exceptional build quality with an all-metal construction and delivers outstanding sound performance. Its versatility is unmatched, allowing direct connection to various devices like audio recorders, interfaces, cameras, and even wireless systems. While it requires phantom power, it can also operate on a single AA battery for mobile use. The highly directional pickup pattern makes it ideal for dialogue, voice-overs, and sound effects. With remarkably low self-noise and Sennheiser's renowned reliability, it rivals the industry-standard MKH 416 at a fraction of the cost. This mic offers 95% of the MKH 416's capabilities with added versatility. It's particularly suited for outdoor dialogue recording but excels in numerous applications, earning its reputation as a jack-of-all-trades. For those seeking a high-quality, versatile microphone without breaking the bank, this Sennheiser offering is an excellent choice that delivers professional-grade performance across a wide range of audio recording scenarios.
I've been using the Rode VideoMic Pro Plus with my R5 for about 8 months now and it's been fantastic. The onboard recording is a lifesaver when you want backup audio, and the deadcat windscreen handles outdoor shoots really well. Battery lasts forever too. Yeah it's pricey but worth every penny if you're doing paid work.
If you are looking for a high-end shotgun mic, you can take a look at SENNHEISER MKH 416.
The Rode VideoMic NTG is an exceptional all-purpose microphone that offers versatility and convenience. It functions as both a camera-mounted mic and a USB mic for computers and smartphones. While the included windshield is adequate, I invested in a separate dead cat wind cover (around £30) for enhanced wind noise reduction.
Previously, I used the Rode NTG 5 with a separate audio recorder, but the VideoMic NTG's direct-to-camera audio capability provides comparable quality with added convenience. Its built-in rechargeable battery, rear volume knob, and auto on/off feature make it user-friendly and adaptable to various recording situations.
For lavalier mic needs or when recording multiple subjects, I rely on the DJI MIC 2. This complementary setup allows me to capture high-quality audio in diverse scenarios, whether it's on-camera dialogue or multi-person interviews.
VideoMic NTG if you want something versatile. Works great on the R5's hot shoe, has USB-C charging, and the frequency response is really well-suited for dialogue. I've compared it side by side with mics twice the price and honestly couldn't justify the upgrade. The safety channel feature has saved my butt more than once too.
Over the years, I've experimented with various microphones for my videography work. Currently, I use a Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro on my R5, which provides decent sound but has some build quality issues. As I frequently shoot steam train footage and prioritize audio quality, I'm considering upgrading to the more expensive Rode Stereo VideoMic X for its near-broadcast quality audio.
I also own a Sennheiser MKE 200, but it's unsuitable for train videos on electrified lines due to interference from overhead catenaries. My Rode mic doesn't have this issue. While the R5 lacks the latest hot shoe for Canon mics, it doesn't affect me much as I often use a separate recorder for audio tracks.
Wireless microphones such as DJI MIC 2 and Rode Wireless Go are more easy to use.
I've had great results with the Rode VideoMic Pro+. It's a shotgun mic that mounts directly on the camera's hot shoe and provides excellent audio quality for run-and-gun shooting. The auto-power feature is really handy, and it has built-in controls for gain and high-pass filter.
Sennheiser MKE 600, I also recommended this.
DJI Mic 2, compact and easy to use.
