Just upgraded to the R6 Mark II from my old DSLR and I'm blown away by the image quality! Currently have the kit 24-105mm but looking to expand my lens collection soon. I shoot mostly portraits and street photography with some landscape work on weekends.

What are your must-have RF lenses for this body? Considering the 85mm f/2 or 50mm f/1.8. Budget is flexible but prefer value over premium glass.

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would actually be a bit cautious about jumping straight to the 35mm for your specific needs. While it is a solid lens, it often feels a bit too wide for dedicated portrait work and can cause some unflattering distortion if you get too close. Since youre looking for reliability and value, staying with focal lengths that are proven for your genres is usually a safer bet. For a balanced kit that wont drain your savings:

  • Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
  • This is the sweet spot for portraits. The compression is much more natural than a 35mm and the IS is very reliable.
  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • Essential for street photography. Its tiny and basically disappears on the R6 Mark II body.
  • Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM
  • If your 24-105mm isnt wide enough for certain landscapes, this is the most affordable way to go ultra-wide. Honestly, the kit lens you already have handles the middle ground just fine, so these primes just fill the gaps where you need more light or a specific look. Its a more conservative approach but it prevents you from buying gear you might regret later. These three together still cost way less than a single L series zoom.

So, honestly, I totally get why people love the L-series glass, but since you mentioned preferring value, I’d maybe steer clear of those super expensive f/1.2 or f/2.8 options for now? I’m still learning the ropes myself, but I’ve found that the non-L lenses are basically 90% as good for a fraction of the price. If you're doing street stuff, you should definitely look at the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. It’s way more versatile than a 50mm for tight streets and the stabilization is amazing. For your portraits, that Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM you mentioned is a total steal. It’s light, sharp, and has that macro feature which is fun for close-ups. Also, for landscapes on a budget, maybe check out the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM? It’s tiny and super cheap. I think you can get three of these primes for less than half the price of one L zoom! Do you think you'll miss the weather sealing on the more expensive ones though? Not 100% sure but I think for most hobbyists, these mid-range ones are plenty.

Just upgraded to the R6 Mark II myself! For versatility, I'd highly recommend the RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM as your first lens if budget allows. It's sharp, fast, and the image stabilization works beautifully with the camera's IBIS. For portraits, the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM is absolutely stunning - the bokeh is dreamy and it's tack sharp. If you're on a tighter budget, the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a fantastic value and surprisingly good optically.
