TBH, I’m gonna play devil's advocate here - jumping on a pre-order for a $2,800 body right out the gate feels a bit risky to me. I've been shooting Canon for years and sometimes those first batches have weird quirks (at least thats what I've seen in the past). From a long-term ownership perspective, there's a couple ways to look at this: * Canon EOS R6 Mark III - You get the latest AF, but youre paying a massive premium. I worry about how the value holds up over the next 3-4 years compared to the Mark II.
* Canon EOS R5 - Honestly, with the price drops, this is a GREAT alternative. It's a pro-tier build and we already know it's a workhorse for the long haul - plus you get that extra resolution.
* Canon EOS R6 Mark II - If youre looking for reliability and saving some cash, this is basically "solved" tech. No surprises or overheating bugs. I dont know... maybe I'm just being too CAUTIOUS, but I usually wait to see how the sensors actually hold up in the wild. Their is always the chance of a better bundle deal early next year anyway.
Honestly, $2,799 is a pretty steep entry point for a mid-range body when you look at the actual performance benchmarks we are seeing so far. If you are doing professional sports or fast-action wildlife, the readout speed on the Canon EOS R6 Mark III is definitely the big selling point, but for the average enthusiast, the real-world gains over the Canon EOS R6 Mark II might be marginal in terms of dynamic range and ISO noise floor. If you are on a budget, it basically makes way more sense to wait for the first round of independent lab tests from sites like DXOMARK or Photons to Photos. I have seen too many people buy into the hype only to find out the sensor is essentially a refined version of the previous gen with better processing. From a practical standpoint, you could pick up a refurbished Canon EOS R5 for less than this pre-order price and get better resolution and similar AF performance for most scenarios. If you really need that specific AF tracking, go for it, but for $2,800, I would want to see verified data on the electronic shutter rolling shutter rates first.
Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
Seems out of stock again.
