what lenses are best for a canon eos r5? sorry if this is a dumb question but i have no idea where to start with all the numbers. i spent most of my budget on the camera itself for my sisters wedding in hawaii next month so i need something affordable that isnt too confusing...

Honestly, jumping straight to an R5 is a big move. Its a beast of a camera but it definitely eats through your wallet fast. Over the years I've learned that you dont always need the super expensive red-ring glass to get great shots, especially when youre just starting out or on a budget. For a wedding in Hawaii, you definitely want something that can handle portraits but also get some of those scenic beach shots. In my experience, sticking with native RF lenses is way safer than messing with adapters and old EF glass for your first big event. You dont want to be fiddling with gear while your sister is walking down the aisle. I've tried many different setups over the years, and simple is almost always better when you're under pressure. Here are the two I'd grab to keep things simple:

  • Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM Basically, the 50mm is for those blurry background portraits during the golden hour, and the zoom covers everything else from the ceremony to the reception. The R5 has incredible autofocus, so even these affordable lenses are gonna perform way better than you might expect. Ngl, that body is technically overkill for these lenses, but they will honestly get the job done without breaking the bank or making you carry a heavy bag in the heat. Just make sure you practice with them before you fly out. Good luck with the wedding, Hawaii is gonna be stunning... hope the weather plays nice for you.

I went through a similar process when I first upgraded my setup. I was concerned about image quality on such a high-res body, but ive been very satisfied with the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. It works well for portraits and the sharpness is great for the price. Quick tip: definitely grab extra Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery packs. The R5 sensor is really power-hungry...

Given the R5 sensor resolution, you need glass that wont bottleneck the 45MP output. The Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM is a decent option for a versatile focal range in Hawaii. For the wedding, the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM offers better sharpness for portraits without the L-series price tag tho. Quick tip: Enable the electronic shutter during the ceremony to avoid noise.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is incredible! Its light, sharp, and provides a versatile focal length for both wedding portraits and those beautiful Hawaii landscapes.
