What are the best prime lenses for Canon EOS R5?

I finally pulled the trigger on the Canon EOS R5, and I’m absolutely blown away by the resolution and autofocus performance so far. However, I’m currently mostly using my old EF glass with an adapter, and I feel like I’m not quite pushing this 45MP sensor to its full potential. I really want to invest in a few native RF prime lenses to get that incredible sharpness and beautiful bokeh that people rave about, but the options are a bit overwhelming.

I’m primarily focused on portraiture and a bit of street photography. I’ve been eyeing the RF 50mm f/1.2L because everyone says it’s the gold standard, but that price tag is definitely making me sweat! On the other hand, I’ve heard great things about the more compact RF 35mm f/1.8 for everyday carry, but I’m worried it might not feel like enough of an 'upgrade' for such a high-end body. I'm also torn between the RF 85mm f/1.2L and the much cheaper f/2 Macro version—is the luxury glass truly worth the extra weight and cost for a dedicated hobbyist?

I want to make sure I’m making a smart investment that does the R5 sensor justice without just buying gear for the sake of it. If you were building a prime lens kit for the R5 from scratch today, which two or three lenses would be at the top of your list?

Sooo, high-res sensors like yours basically demand elite glass to resolve all that detail. Honestly, I went through this last year and realized: - Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM: Peak sharpness vs Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM: Handy but lacks 'pop'.
- Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM: Pure magic for portraits compared to the f/2. In my experience, L-series glass is realllly the only way to do that R5 justice!!

In my experience, I've tried many, so just grab:
- Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM
- Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM
They resolve that 45MP sensor perfectly and are way better value tbh.

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.

Oh man, congrats on the R5!! That camera is literally a beast. I totally feel u on the price tag anxiety, but honestly, if u want to play it safe and really protect your investment, you gotta go with the L-series glass. From a reliability perspective, the weather sealing and tank-like build quality of the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM are just unmatched—I've used mine in light rain and dusty streets without even flinching. Basically, that 45MP sensor is sooo unforgiving with cheaper glass; you might see some fringing or softness on the budget primes that'll just frustrate u later. If I were building a kit from scratch today, I'd highkey suggest the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM for portraits because it's the safest bet for that 'wow' factor every single time. For street, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is actually a solid, lightweight choice, but just know it wont feel as rugged as the big boys. I think starting with the 50mm L is the smartest move though... it’s a lifer lens for sure! gl!
