So I finally saved up and bought the Canon EOS R6 for my kids soccer games and some family trips we have coming up. It cost way more than I expected and my budget is pretty much gone now so I need to be careful with what I buy next. I honestly have no idea what I actually need to make it work or keep it safe and I'm kinda overwhelmed by all the options. Sorry if this is a dumb question but I'm a total beginner and I dont want to ruin it.

What are the absolute must-have accessories for someone just starting out?

  • memory cards (is there a specific kind?)
  • a protective bag
  • extra batteries maybe?

Regarding what #3 said about "If you need a cheaper card than SanDisk,..." - honestly, dont cheap out on storage or you risk losing everything. In my experience, cheap cards fail when you least expect it. Ive found these more reliable over the years tho:

I've spent way too much on gear that ended up being trash, especially bags that offer zero actual protection. It sucks when you realize your expensive new camera is basically rattling around in a thin sleeve. I'd look at the Lowepro Adventura SH 160 II Camera Bag instead... it's solid for the price and fits the R6 well. For those soccer games, you're gonna be shooting bursts, and unfortunately most basic cards just can't keep up with the buffer. I was pretty let down by some of the mid-tier stuff I tried, so now I just use the Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-II. It actually handles the data without lagging. Also, stay away from those cheap batteries on auction sites. They're junk and wont last. The SmallRig LP-E6NH Camera Battery is a much better middle ground that wont die on you mid-trip.

If you need a cheaper card than SanDisk, the Lexar Professional 1667x SDXC UHS-II 128GB is a solid option for sports. For carrying it, the Amazon Basics Large Gadget Bag is surprisingly decent if you're broke like I was. Honestly, just get a ULBTER Tempered Glass Screen Protector for Canon R6 too... it saves the screen from sticky kid fingers.

Unfortunately, my generic cards kept bottlenecking the buffer and I missed the winning goal. Honestly not great. Just get any SanDisk cards, they actually handle the data rates properly.

Quick reply here while I'm thinking about it... you definitely want to be careful with power management on that R6. It burns through juice way faster than you'd think. Before I list out everything though, are you planning to shoot 4K video of the kids or just sticking to photos? That really changes my advice on the cards and power needs. For batteries, you basically have two paths. The Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery is the official one and it's the only way to guarantee you get the full high-speed burst for sports, but they're pricey. I've also used the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for LP-E6NH to save some cash. They work okay, but you might notice the camera slows down its shooting speed once the battery gets below 50 percent. Just something to keep in mind if you're trying to save every penny while still getting through a whole game.
