I just got a used Canon for my Italy trip next month but I'm totally lost. I have the camera and lens but no idea what else goes in the bag. Don't want to spend too much maybe under $100?

Sorry if this is basic but what are the absolute must-have accessories for traveling with a DSLR?

Grab a Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap. Compared to bulky brands like Manfrotto, its more low-profile for city walks and stays well within your budget, ngl.

Italy is gonna be awesome but unfortunately, I've had way too many issues with cheap gear failing me when it matters most. I once bought a huge generic accessory kit and it was honestly so disappointing... the cheap tripod legs literally snapped. Dont waste your $100 on those massive bundles. Instead, just get a few solid basics. I had issues with slow buffer speeds until I switched to the SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB SDXC UHS-I V30. Its a life saver. Also, generic batteries are usually not as good as expected, but the Wasabi Power LP-E17 Battery and Dual USB Charger is a rare exception that actually holds a charge. Lastly, grab a LensPen NLP-1 Lens Cleaning Tool because liquid cleaners are messy and usually just smudge your glass anyway. Stick to these and you'll be set for the trip.

^ This. Also, generic bundles are usually just full of junk you wont use. To provide a better recommendation, I have two specific questions:

  • What lens model are you using?
  • Do you prefer carrying the camera on your body or in a bag while walking? Italy involves a lot of walking, so weight is a major factor. Choosing the right gear depends on your setup so you dont overspend.

Gonna try this over the weekend. Will report back if it works!

Building on the earlier suggestion, you really cant skimp on how you store your photos. Italy is basically a once in a lifetime trip and honestly losing your shots because of a faulty card or just losing a tiny card in your bag is the absolute worst. Back on my first trip to Rome, my extra cards were just floating around in a side pocket. While grabbing a fresh one at the Colosseum, two of them just fell out into the dirt. Almost lost a whole days worth of street photography because I was being messy. Definitely look into:

  • Multiple smaller capacity cards
  • A hard shell case to keep them organized
  • A simple card reader Its way more reliable than those cheap bundles everyone talks about. Keeping your data safe is worth the extra few bucks tbh.
