With the Canon EOS R7 Mark II rumored for late 2025, I'm curious about what upgrades we might see. Sources suggest around 40MP resolution and 8K video capabilities, plus potential elimination of the mechanical shutter for faster performance. Body size may increase with R5 Mark II-like ergonomics, and new "pro" RF-S lenses covering 24-200mm equivalent are expected alongside it. What other improvements are you hoping for? Better low-light performance? Enhanced autofocus tracking? The current R7 is solid, but these rumored upgrades could make it a real Fujifilm X-T5 competitor.
Honestly, I've been looking at how this stacks up against the competition, like the Fujifilm X-T5 or even the Sony Alpha a6700. Canon really needs to step up the RF-S lens lineup if they want this to be a serious contender for pros. Right now, Fuji just has so many more native crop-sensor lenses. I'm still learning the ropes with all the tech specs, but it seems like the body is only half the battle, right? Like, if they don't release some fast f/2.8 zooms alongside it, people might just jump ship to Sony for the lens variety. Do you think they'll price it high enough to compete with the Fujifilm X-H2S? It feels like a big risk if the ecosystem stays this closed off. Anyway, I'm curious if you guys think Canon will finally let more third-party lenses in to help fill those gaps? It would definitely make the R7 II a lot more tempting for someone like me who is still figuring out which system to commit to.
From CR:
I totally agree that the stacked sensor is the logical next step, but honestly, I’m more interested in the reliability side of things. If they’re pushing that much data through an APS-C body, the thermal management has to be spot on. Not sure but IIRC, there were some rumblings about a redesigned chassis to help with heat dissipation during high-bitrate recording. For a pro-grade body, a few things are essential for me:
* Dual CFexpress Type B slots (or at least one). SD cards basically cant keep up with the buffer clearing needed for 40fps.
* Proper weather sealing gaskets that actually match the R5 series standards.
* A more robust power delivery system to handle the DIGIC Accelerator without draining the battery in an hour. Anyway, speed is cool and all, but if it overheats in the field or the card buffer chokes ur workflow, all those specs are just numbers. Tbh, I just want a tank that wont fail when things get intense. Hopefully, Canon doesn't sacrifice build quality for the sake of a thinner body profile...
Yep, this is the way
The upcoming Canon EOS R7 Mark II is rumored to feature a 33-40MP APS-C stacked CMOS sensor with faster readout and reduced rolling shutter, potentially custom-designed for this model. The camera will likely include Canon's DIGIC X processor with DIGIC Accelerator for enhanced autofocus performance and processing speed.
Key improvements include up to 8.5 stops of in-body image stabilization and a 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder with improved refresh rates. The camera may eliminate the mechanical shutter entirely, relying on a 40 FPS electronic shutter system.
Video capabilities are expected to include 4K 120FPS recording with Canon Log 3 support, with potential for 6K 120FPS or 8K 60FPS. The body design will feature EOS R5 Mark II-like ergonomics with improved grip and AF joystick, plus dual memory card slots supporting CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SD cards.
Advanced features include AI-driven subject tracking, pre-continuous shooting, and in-camera upscaling. Positioned as a "mini R1," the camera aims to bring professional features to the APS-C line.
Expected release window is September-December 2025, with pricing higher than the original R7. Canon may also introduce new RF-S lenses alongside the camera launch.
