Which prime lens is actually the best for portraits on a Canon mirrorless? I'm looking at the RF 85mm f1.2 because everyone says it is the dream lens but then I see folks saying the 85mm f2 macro is basically just as good for a fraction of the price. I have like $1500 to spend max and I'm doing an outdoor shoot for my cousin's graduation in two weeks so I need to buy something soon. Is the expensive one really worth the extra weight and cost for a casual user or is there a better middle ground? I looked at the 50mm too but idk if that's tight enough for the look I want...

Honestly, the 1.2 is a beast thatll blow your budget anyway. Over the years Ive found the Canon RF 85mm f2 Macro IS STM is more than enough for family shoots. Its super sharp for outdoor portraits and wont kill your shoulder. Just a heads up tho, the autofocus on the f2 is a bit slower than L glass, so just be ready to time those graduation walk shots carefully.

Over the years, I've learned that heavy glass usually leads to sore necks. I once used a heavy f1.2 for a graduation and regretted it by the second hour. For your budget, the Canon RF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM is the sweet spot.

  • Weather sealing for outdoor safety
  • Fast focus for moving grads
  • L-series reliability It kinda beats the 85mm f2 for professional results and wont break the bank.
