Hey everyone — I’m hoping to get some real-world recommendations on a solid carrying case for a DJI Mavic 3.
I just picked up a Mavic 3 and I’m realizing pretty quickly that the “throw it in the backpack carefully” approach isn’t going to cut it long-term. Most of my flying is weekend trips and short hikes, plus the occasional drive to a spot where the case is getting slid around in the trunk with other gear. I want something that actually protects the drone and accessories, not just a soft bag that looks nice.
Here’s what I’m trying to carry in the case: the Mavic 3 with gimbal guard on, the RC controller, at least 3 batteries, the charging hub/charger and cables, and a few ND filters. I’d also love a setup that doesn’t require me to fully disassemble everything every time (like removing sticks, pulling the gimbal cover off, etc.).
I’m torn between a hard-shell style case (Pelican-style) vs a compact shoulder bag. Hard cases seem safer, but I’m worried they’ll be bulky and annoying to hike with. Shoulder bags look way more convenient, but I don’t know which ones actually have decent padding and a layout that makes sense for the Mavic 3.
Budget-wise I’m flexible, but I’d like to stay under around $150 unless there’s a strong reason to go higher.
What carrying case are you using for the Mavic 3 (specifically with the RC controller), and what do you like or dislike about it for travel and general protection?
Ok so i did the “careful backpack” thing for like 2 trips and yeah… nope lol. For your use (trunk + short hikes), I’ve been realy happy with a hard case: PGYTECH Safety Carrying Case for DJI Mavic 3 with DJI RC (Hard Shell). Fits Mavic 3 w/ gimbal guard, RC, 3+ batts, hub, filters, and you dont have to baby it. Downside: kinda bulky to hike with, but protection is A+.
Story time: i went through this last year. I started with a shoulder bag (looked slick) but after 2 trunk rides it was basically a stress test… stuff shifted, and the RC sticks kept getting bumped even when i “packed it right” lol. I switched to DJI Mavic 3 Fly More Kit Shoulder Bag for quick grab-and-go (it’s pretty decent for short hikes), and for “trunk chaos” days I use a cheap-ish hard case: Apache 3800 Weatherproof Protective Case with foam cutouts. Under $150 total if you catch a sale, and honestly the value is fantastic. Tip that helped me: cut foam so the Mavic can go in with gimbal guard on + RC with sticks attached, then leave 1-2cm foam walls between cavities so it doesn’t crush-in over time. gl!

+1 to the hard-case crowd for that use, honestly. After a few years of “oops the trunk ate my drone bag” moments… yeah, soft bags just dont stop crush force. If you want a different hard option under your budget, check Nanuk 915 Waterproof Protective Case with Foam Insert (Black). It’s super solid latches + real gasket seal, and you can cut the foam so the Mavic 3 + RC + 3 batts don’t shift at all.
Quick tip: leave a little foam “bridge” so you can pull the RC out without yanking sticks, and do a quick shake test before trusting it. gl!
Seconding the hard-case idea for trunk chaos — shoulder bags get squished, fast. If you want a diff option than PGYTECH, check Pelican 1500 Case with Pick N Pluck Foam (Black) or the smaller Pelican 1450 Case with Pick N Pluck Foam (Black). Key tip: cut foam so the Mavic 3 sits with gimbal guard ON + RC sticks on, and leave a “grab notch” so you’re not yanking gear out... gl!
Same, mood — for trunk chaos I ended up happier with a compact hard-shell from SKB vs my old shoulder bag; the big win was rigid dividers so the RC sticks didnt get bumped.
