I just picked up the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 and I’m loving it, but the built-in mics aren’t quite cutting it for what I’m doing. I mostly film talking-head clips and quick street/travel shots, often outdoors where wind and background noise get messy. I’m trying to figure out the best external mic setup that actually works well with the Pocket 3 (USB-C / DJI Mic 2 / other options), without turning it into a bulky rig. Ideally I want clean voice audio, decent wind protection, and something easy to set up on the go. What external mic (or mic + adapter setup) would you recommend specifically for the Pocket 3?

So yeah, +1 to the DJI Mic 2 suggestion above — it’s honestly the least headache setup. If you wanna stay small + reduce wind, a few extra thoughts (not 100% sure but this is what’s worked for me/I’ve heard):
- Use a lav + proper furry windscreen, not just the tiny foam (foam does basically nothing in real wind)
- Keep the mic under a collar/hat brim if you can (huge difference)
- If you go USB-C wired, double-check it’ll do digital audio (some mics/phones get picky) tho
- Set manual-ish levels if possible so traffic noise doesn’t pump your voice
Anyway, clean voice outdoors is like 80% wind control + placement, mic is the other 20% lol

TL;DR: I’d go wireless via DJI Mic 2 direct-to-camera, or a tiny wired USB‑C handheld/clip mic if you want zero RF risk.

I’m not 100% sure what firmware you’re on, but in my experience reliability outdoors = fewer adapters + solid wind. Seriously: use a real furry wind cover, set a safety track/low gain if available, and do a 10‑sec test record every time (I’ve lost takes to a loose USB‑C more than once… ugh). For street/travel, I’d prioritize a locked/strain‑relieved cable or clip over “perfect sound.” ngl that’s the safety-first move.

For your situation, yeah… been there. Pocket 3 sounds great *for a tiny cam*, but outdoors + talking head? You really want a dedicated mic chain.

1) **Best “clean voice, zero fuss”**: DJI Mic 2 (1 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case)
- Pros: pairs stupid-easy with the Pocket 3 ecosystem, rock-solid wireless, nice vocal clarity, and the included furry windscreen actually works. 48kHz digital, good noise handling, and you can keep the camera setup super minimal.
- Cons: costs more, and wireless is still wireless (RF can be a thing in dense cities… rarely, but it happens).

2) **Best ultra-minimal/cheapest**: RØDE VideoMicro II + DJI Osmo Pocket 3 Expansion Adapter
- Pros: no batteries, no pairing, just plug-and-go via 3.5mm (through the adapter). Surprisingly clean for street/travel, and the included wind protection is decent.
- Cons: it’s on-camera, so you’re still a bit farther from your mouth vs a lav… so street noise can creep in.

3) **Best “pro voice” for talking-head**: RØDE Wireless PRO (or similar) into the Pocket 3 via the adapter
- Pros: lav placement = WAY better signal-to-noise. You’ll get that broadcast-y voice even in chaos.
- Cons: slightly more setup/bulk, more pieces to manage.

If I had to pick one? DJI Mic 2 (1 TX + 1 RX + Charging Case) is honestly the sweet spot for Pocket 3 run-n-gun. Good luck!!

yo jumping in — quick background from too many years of run-n-gun: outdoor voice audio is 90% *mic placement + wind protection*, and only like 10% the camera. Why it matters: the Pocket 3 is tiny, so getting the mic *close* and keeping wind off it is the whole game.

1) **Best cheap “clean voice” upgrade (still small):** RØDE Lavalier GO 3.5mm Lavalier Microphone (~$79) + a tiny USB‑C audio interface like RØDE AI-Micro USB Audio Interface (~$79). Clipped 6–8" from your mouth = way cleaner than any on-cam mic, and you can use real furry windscreens.

2) **Budget wireless that doesn’t balloon the rig:** Hollyland Lark M2 Wireless Lavalier Microphone System (USB-C) (often ~$119–$149). In my experience it’s “good enough” for travel talking-head stuff, and the little deadcat helps a lot (still add a better furry if you’re in real wind).

3) **If you want *directional* street audio on the cheap:** RØDE VideoMicro II Compact On-Camera Shotgun Microphone (~$79) + proper USB‑C adapter/interface (same idea as above). Not as good as a lav for voice, but nicer for ambient + quick grabs.

Resources that helped me: DJI’s Pocket 3 audio compatibility notes/manual, Curtis Judd’s YouTube mic tests, and Podcastage for mic shootouts (they’re pretty honest).

But yeah… spend $10–$20 on better furry windscreens and you’ll hear it immediately. gl!

TL;DR: keep it tiny + clean voice = go **wired USB‑C** with a mini on-camera receiver mic.

For your situation, I’d suggest RØDE VideoMic GO II straight into the Pocket 3 via USB‑C. It’s honestly the best “no wireless drama” option I’ve used—super quick setup, good voice clarity, and it doesn’t turn the Pocket into a Frankenstein rig. Add RØDE WS12 Deluxe Windshield for VideoMic GO II and wind goes from “ruins takes” to “totally usable” most days.

Market-wise, RØDE’s USB-C mics are just more consistent across devices than a lot of random USB-C clip mics. If you want even smaller, RØDE VideoMicro II is solid too, but you’ll need the right USB-C audio path. hope that helps, gl!
