I’m planning to fly my DJI Mini 3 Pro over a lake for some low shots and I’m nervous about a splashdown. I want water landing gear/floats that don’t mess with the gimbal, still let the bottom sensors work, and won’t add too much weight/wind drag. Any specific brands or setups you trust?
Ok so yeah, same here — flying the Mini 3 Pro low over water is sketchy, and I agree with the “keep it simple/light” approach.
- In my experience, the BEST setups are the foam “donut” style float sets from STARTRC / PGYTECH rather than the tall-leg ones. They sit wider, don’t crowd the gimbal, and they’re less tippy on a splash.
- Make sure whatever you buy has cutouts so it doesn’t block the downward sensors/light. If it covers that area even a little, you’ll get weird hover/drift.
- Also… test in a calm spot first and watch your wind. Even small floats add drag, like, a lot.
Anyway, I’d prioritize sensor clearance + low profile over “big” floats. gl!
Seconded!
Oh man i feel u… low over a lake is like the one time the Mini 3 Pro decides to do something dumb lol. For your situation, I’d go with the “donut”/ring style floats, not the tall skids. I’ve had good luck with STARTRC Landing Gear Water Float Kit for DJI Mini 3 Pro — it sits low, doesn’t block the gimbal, and the downward sensors usually behave as long as you mount it centered and keep it out of the sensor windows.
If you want the lightest “oops insurance” setup, PGYTECH Landing Gear Extensions for DJI Mini 3 Pro + a little buoyant foam (DIY) is kinda nice… but yeah, DIY is sketchier. Whatever you pick, do a hover test over grass first and keep wind low. good luck
Quick question — are you trying to actually land on the lake, or just want “oops insurance” for low passes? I tried a float setup once and it was NOT as good as expected… extra drag made it wobble in gusts and the downward sensors got flaky over ripples lol
Can confirm
Ngl, everyone here basically hit the nail on the head with the donut style recommendation. They really are the only way to go if you're gonna do it. But as someone who's been flying these things since the original Mavic, I gotta add a huge word of caution about the weight and drag. Adding any kind of floats to a sub-250g drone like the Mini 3 Pro completely changes the flight physics. You're basically turning it into a little kite. Even a light breeze can make the motors work overtime to stay stable, which drains the battery way faster than the app expects. The biggest risk tho isnt just the splash... it's the flip. Those floats keep it above water, sure, but if it tips over in a wave, the gimbal and internal boards are toast anyway. Tbh, think of the gear as a maybe I can grab it insurance policy, not a permit to treat the lake like a runway. Just fly smart and keep your altitude up if the wind picks up even a little bit.
