Hey everyone! I recently picked up the DJI Osmo Action 4 for some travel vlogging and mountain biking, but I’m struggling to get the audio quality exactly where I want it. While the built-in mics are decent, they pick up way too much wind noise when I'm moving fast. I’m looking for a solid external setup that’s rugged but lightweight. I’ve heard the DJI Mic 2 pairs seamlessly via Bluetooth, but I’m also considering a wired Rode VideoMicro II for a more budget-friendly option. Has anyone tested these, or perhaps found a better USB-C solution that doesn't require a bulky adapter? I’m really looking for that 'sweet spot' of great audio without ruining the compact setup. What microphones are you guys using with your Action 4?
Seconding the recommendation above! The DJI setup is highkey the best, but i get the budget concern. Stumbled upon this and wanted to suggest: 1. Rode VideoMicro II: Best budget shotgun. It's light, but you'll need a TRS-to-USB-C cable which might dangle.
2. Sennheiser+XS+Lav+USB-C&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser XS Lav USB-C: Direct USB-C! No adapter needed. I guess a lav might be safer for MTB wind if you hide it under your shirt? idk but gl! 👍
In my experience, getting clean audio while mountain biking is a total pain cuz of the wind. I've tried a few setups with my Action 4, and here's what I recommend: 1. DJI Mic 2 Wireless Microphone System: This is honestly the "sweet spot." Since it pairs directly via Bluetooth, you dont need any cables or adapters at all. It's super lightweight and lowkey the cleanest setup for vlogging. It's pricey, but the convenience is huge.
2. Rode VideoMicro II Ultra-compact Shotgun Microphone: If you're on a budget, this is solid, but make sure to use the Rode SC16 USB-C to USB-C Cable. It lets you plug directly into the camera without that bulky DJI adapter. Just be careful with cable snags on the trails!
3. Boyalink Wireless Lavalier Microphone System with USB-C: A great direct USB-C alternative. The receiver is tiny and plugs right in, saving you from dongle hell. Tbh, I'd go with the Mic 2 for the seamless pairing. gl!
I've gone through a bunch of setups for my MTB rides and honestly, I stopped using my high-end gear after a nasty spill on a trail. Just wasn't worth the stress. Now I mostly stick to more budget-friendly brands that still deliver. I've had a lot of luck with the Ulanzi J12 Wireless Lavalier Microphone System. It's way cheaper than the DJI Mic 2 and the receiver plugs directly into the Action 4's USB-C port without any extra cables flapping around. If you're really worried about wind, I've found that the Boya BY-M3 USB-C Lavalier Microphone is a great direct-to-USB-C option too. I usually just snake the wire up through my jersey and clip it inside my helmet's chin bar. It basically cuts out all the wind noise for like a fraction of the cost of the big names. Def worth a look if you dont wanna blow your whole travel budget on just audio.

tbh i think a cheap USB-C lav from a brand like Comica is the best value. It's lowkey a solid move for riding cuz you clip it inside ur helmet. gl!
Bookmarked, thanks!
