Hi everyone! I’ve recently fallen in love with my Fujifilm X-T30 II, but I’m really itching to try some close-up photography, specifically for flowers and the occasional insect. I looked at the native Fuji XF 80mm macro, but it’s unfortunately way out of my price range right now. I’m looking for something more budget-friendly, ideally under $300. I’ve seen some manual focus options from brands like TTArtisan and 7Artisans, but I’m not sure if the image quality holds up or if I should look for an older adapted lens instead. Has anyone here had good experiences with affordable third-party macros on their X-series? What would you recommend for someone just starting out in macro without breaking the bank?
So I went through this exact same struggle last year when I got my X-T30 II. I really wanted that pro look but I couldn't justify the price tag of the native Fuji 80mm... honestly, it's just wild how much they want for that glass.
Just sharing my experience: I first tried to go the ultra-budget route with the Fujifilm MCEX-11 Extension Tube and even the Fujifilm MCEX-16 Extension Tube on my kit lens. Big mistake. I was so disappointed because the focus range becomes tiny and you lose sooo much light. It felt like I was fighting the gear more than taking photos. Then I tried the TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount since it was dirt cheap, but for bugs? Forget it. The focal length is too short, so you're basically on top of the insect and they just fly away. Plus, the edge sharpness was... not as good as expected, tbh.
I eventually bit the bullet on a used Laowa 65mm f/2.8 2x Ultra Macro APO for Fuji X. It usually hovers right around $300-350 new, but you can snag deals. The 2:1 magnification is a total game changer compared to standard 1:1 lenses.
Quick tip: Honestly, just skip the extension tubes and go straight for a dedicated macro lens. Also, since these third-party ones are manual, turn on focus peaking (set it to Red/High) on ur Fuji—it's the only way to survive macro without AF. anyway gl! 👍
This^ Also wanted to add that I've been super satisfied with the TTArtisan 40mm f/2.8 Macro Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount. It works well, but honestly, always inspect the mount for debris before attaching it. Safety first! Also, ngl, you should grab a Hoya 52mm UV Filter to protect the glass from scratches when youre literally inches from bugs. No complaints here, just gotta be cautious! gl
In my experience, grab the 7Artisans 60mm f/2.8 II Macro Lens for Fujifilm X-Mount. At under $200, the 1:1 reproduction ratio is excellent and it’s honestly the best value... works well tho!
