So I am heading to Chicago in like two weeks for a quick vacation and I really want to finally get into street photography while I am there but I am totally overthinking the lens situation for my X-T30 II. Ive been looking at the 23mm f2 and the 35mm f2 because everyone says they are the gold standard for street stuff but honestly I am just getting more confused the more I read.
My logic was that the 23mm (35mm equivalent) is the classic focal length so I should just get that and be done with it but then I saw a bunch of people online saying it can be a bit soft wide open when you are close up and that kind of freaks me out because I want those sharp shots of people in the subway. Then there is the 35mm which people say has better character but I am worried it is gonna be way too tight for some of the narrower alleys or if I am trying to get some architecture in the shot too.
I only have about 450 or 500 bucks to spend right now so I cant just buy both and see what sticks which sucks. I just dont want to be standing on a busy corner fumbling around feeling like I have the wrong gear or missing the shot because I am too far back. Does the 23mm really feel that much wider in practice or am I just being paranoid? I just want something fast and reliable that wont make me look like a total tourist with a massive zoom lens...
I've tried many primes, but honestly, the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 R WR is the best value. That extra width is crucial for Chicago and the softness rumors are totally overblown, imo.
Like someone mentioned, that extra width is totally worth it! I was in your shoes last summer with a tiny budget. I went with the wider option and it was such a win because I didnt have to keep backing into traffic to get the shot lol.
Exactly what I was thinking
