I recently switched to the Fujifilm system with an X-T5, and I am absolutely loving the film simulations, but I am struggling to decide on the perfect lens for street photography. I really value portability and quick autofocus since I want to stay discreet while walking through the city.
I have been looking at the compact 23mm f/2 and the 35mm f/2 lenses because they are weather-sealed and tiny, but I am also curious if it is worth stepping up to the 18mm f/1.4 for that wider perspective. Does anyone have experience with these in busy environments? Which lens do you think offers the best balance of size and image quality for capturing candid street moments?
In my experience, stick with the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR. Its been my go-to for years cuz its tiny and way faster than that 18mm f/1.4 when youre moving fast, right?
Curious about one thing: what's your actual budget for this lens and are you mostly shooting in broad daylight or doing night street stuff?? I'm asking because while the Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR is nice, it's like $999 and unfortunately it's not as good as expected for stealth. I had issues with bigger lenses drawing way too much attention on my Fujifilm X-T5, which is basically the opposite+of+what+you+wan&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">opposite of what you want for candids... it's super frustrating when you lose a shot cuz someone spotted your gear. The Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR is way cheaper at around $450 and much more discreet, but idk if f/2 is enough for your needs. Do you usually prefer wider environmental shots or do you like to get a bit tighter with something like the Fujifilm XF 35mm f/2 R WR? Knowing your style helps a lot before you drop that much cash!! good luck!
In my experience, heavy glass unfortunately kills ur stealth. Honestly, the $450 Fujifilm XF 23mm f2 R WR is better; it's half the price, lighter, and more discreet for candid street work.
Sooo, I totally get where youre coming from with the Fujifilm X-T5. I've been shooting Fuji for years and honestly, I learned the hard way that bigger isnt always better when youre dodging people on a busy sidewalk. I remember one time I was out with a heavy setup and I actually bumped into a metal post because my kit was so front-heavy and clunky. It almost damaged my lens mount!! Ever since then, I've been really cautious about keeping things balanced and safe. For your situation, I would suggest the Fujifilm XF 23mm f/2 R WR. It’s basically the gold standard for a reason. While that Fujifilm XF 18mm f/1.4 R LM WR has incredible glass, it’s a bit of a liability if you want to stay lowkey and keep your gear safe from accidental knocks in a crowd. Heres why I think the f/2 line is the safer, more reliable choice for street work:
