I'm looking to get into sports photography with my Fujifilm X-mount camera and need recommendations for the best lens. What are the top X-mount lenses that excel in capturing fast action shots? Any insights on focal lengths, apertures, and overall performance would be greatly appreciated!

I have been quite disappointed with how some of the mid-range zooms handle actual field sports. I really tried to make the Fujifilm XF 55-200mm f3.5-4.8 R LM OIS work for my kit, but I had issues with the focus tracking being way too sluggish for soccer. It is fine for slower subjects, but for fast action, it is not as good as expected and ends up being a waste of money if you are missing the shot. If you look at the technical side, you really need those Linear Motors (LM) to track anything moving at speed. I eventually moved to the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f2.8 R LM OIS WR and that is where the real performance is. Unfortunately, lenses like the Fujifilm XF 70-300mm f4-5.6 R LM OIS WR have that variable aperture that kills your shutter speed options. Once you hit f/5.6 at the long end, your ISO has to jump so high to hit 1/1000 that the images get too noisy. Its just more practical to invest in the f/2.8 glass from the start so you dont have to upgrade twice.

You might want to consider looking at some older used glass if you are trying to save money, but be careful with the focus speed on the non-linear motor versions. I would suggest checking the specific burst rate compatibility for your body too because some of those older lenses cant actually hit the high fps that the newer sensors push out. Basically you dont want to spend 500 bucks on a lens that caps your camera at 3 fps.

  • make sure to check the firmware versions
  • watch for hunting in low light
  • maybe look at third-party stuff to keep costs down Honestly tho, I spent so much time researching gear last month that I almost missed my kids soccer tournament signup. I finally got him registered but then I realized the fields they play on are like right next to this massive construction site. The dust is everywhere. I spent half the time worrying about my sensor getting dirty instead of actually watching the game... had to go buy one of those air blower things at a local shop that charged me like triple the price and it didnt even work that well. Anyway lol sorry kinda went off topic there.

Here are some of the best options:

  1. Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD

    • This lens offers a constant f/2.8 aperture, which is beneficial for low-light conditions often encountered in sports photography. It features excellent autofocus performance and optical image stabilization, making it versatile for various shooting situations, including fast-paced action and indoor events. Its 4.1x zoom range (equivalent to 25-105mm in full-frame terms) allows for flexibility in framing shots without needing to switch lenses.
  2. Fujifilm XF 16-55mm f/2.8 R LM WR

    • This lens is a premium option with a fixed f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range. While it lacks optical stabilization, it pairs well with Fujifilm cameras that have in-body image stabilization (IBIS). It is known for its sharpness and build quality, making it a reliable choice for sports photography.
  3. Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 R LM OIS WR

    • For those needing more reach, this telephoto zoom lens offers a constant f/2.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. It is particularly well-suited for capturing distant subjects in sports, providing excellent image quality and fast autofocus capabilities.
  4. Tamron 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3 Di III-A VC VXD

    • This superzoom lens provides an extensive focal range, making it ideal for capturing a variety of sports scenarios without needing to change lenses frequently. While its maximum aperture is not as wide as the others, it still offers good performance for outdoor sports in well-lit conditions.

In summary, the Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 is often highlighted as the best all-around lens for sports photography due to its combination of features, while the Fujifilm XF 50-140mm f/2.8 is excellent for those needing a longer reach.
