Hey everyone! Just picked up the new Panasonic S9 and I'm absolutely loving the compact form factor and image quality so far. I'm coming from a different system and need to build up my L-mount lens collection from scratch.
I'm primarily interested in street photography and portraits, with some occasional landscape work. Budget isn't unlimited but I'm willing to invest in quality glass. Should I go native Panasonic, Sigma, or Leica? Any specific focal lengths you'd recommend starting with?
Would really appreciate hearing about your real-world experiences and favorites!
Thanks in advance!
The Panasonic S9 is perfectly paired with compact lenses due to its small form factor and L-mount compatibility. Here are the standout choices that work best with this content creator-focused camera:
Compact Kit Lens: The Panasonic 18-40mm f/4.5-6.3 is an instant favorite for vlogging, being incredibly small, compact and lightweight. When paired with the S9, the total weight is just 1.4 pounds, making it extremely portable.
Premium Standard Kit: The Lumix S 20-60mm f/3.5-5.6 has been the go-to standard kit lens for the Lumix S5-series and is worth considering for the S9, offering more reach than the 18-40mm.
Compact Prime Options: The Sigma 45mm f/2.8 DG DN C, Sigma 17mm f/4 DG DN C, and Sigma 24mm f/3.5 DG DN C are well-reviewed compact options. Many users specifically praise the Sigma 45mm f/2.8 as their primary daily lens paired with the S9.
Travel Zoom: For a superzoom travel lens, the Lumix S 28-200mm f/4-7.1 Macro O.I.S. is remarkably compact and bucks the trend of typically big, heavy lenses.
What to Avoid: The Panasonic S 26mm f/8 pancake lens has no AF, unadjustable f/8 aperture, and no filter threads, making it hard to recommend unless you get it free.
The S9's strength lies in its compatibility with compact f/1.8 prime lenses, which are perfect matches for the camera's size and increasingly popular among creators. All the best lenses are weather-resistant except the 26mm f/8, with Lumix building this feature into almost all their S lenses.
@Reply #2 - good point! honestly tho, i've been shooting with these systems for years and the best thing you can do is just head over to youtube. there is a guy who did a massive deep dive on every single compact lens that actually fits the s9's vibe. i forget his name but if you search s9 lens guide it is like the first result. tbh, reddit also has a huge megathread in the lumix sub that is way more detailed than anything we can type out here. i usually just end up checking the panasonic site directly anyway cuz they have a whole compatibility chart that shows exactly how the glass balances on that tiny body. saves a ton of headache...
For versatility, I'd recommend the 28-200mm - I have been using it on my S9, and it has great output, and it really makes the camera an all purpose small FF setup. I also have the 20-60mm for a small zoom, but the 28-200mm is not much bigger, and considerably more useful as a walk-around lens. It covers a very wide range of focal lengths and might be the only lens you need to take with you on your travels.
