Finally moved up to the Q3 after years with the Q2 and honestly the ergonomics feel slightly different in my hand, maybe its the weight balance? anyway i need a thumb grip for an upcoming trip to Japan in three weeks but Leica wants like $250 for theirs which is just insane for a bit of machined aluminum. Looking at stuff like Haoge or Match Technical but im worried about:
Is the official one actually better or am I just paying for the logo? kinda seems like a rip off but I dont want to ruin the look of the camera...
Like someone mentioned, these third-party options can be a gamble for your hardware. I've been down this road and, unfortunately, I had issues with the physical tolerances on almost every mid-range grip I tried. My main concern is the mechanical stress on the hot shoe assembly. If the grip doesnt fit perfectly, every time you press your thumb, youre essentially prying the shoe away from the top plate. I've seen some nasty internal damage from this on other Leica bodies. I eventually tested the SmallRig Thumb Grip for Leica Q3 4514 and while the build is decent for the price, it is still not as reassuring as the OEM. It’s disappointing that the market is flooded with parts that prioritize looks over structural safety. If you go the third-party route, check the contact points constantly... a grip without a proper buffer is just a disaster waiting to happen for your electronics.
Regarding what #1 said about flimsy knockoffs failing, I'm satisfied with these:
Unfortunately I had issues with flimsy knockoffs failing on my Q2, but the Haoge THB-Q3B Black Aluminum Thumb Grip for Leica Q3 is decent for the price. Enjoy the trip to Japan!
