Nikon is developing the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, a standard zoom lens for the Nikon Z mount system

MELVILLE, NY (October 30, 2024) Nikon Inc. is pleased to announce the ongoing development of the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, a standard zoom lens that is compatible with full-frame/FX-format mirrorless cameras for which the Nikon Z mount has been adopted.

The NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ is a standard zoom lens with power zoom that covers the focal range from 28mm to 135mm. It is designed to provide ease of use and superior optical performance for video recording, supporting efficient recording for documentaries and location work by a solo videographer or small crew.

Nikon will continue to pursue a new dimension in optical performance while meeting users' needs, contributing to the development of imaging culture, with the hope of expanding possibilities for imaging expression.

Honestly i'm so happy they're finally doing this. I do a lot of event filming on the side and a proper PZ lens has been the one thing missing from my kit for a while now. Tbh the focal range is basically perfect for documentaries where you dont want to be swapping glass every five minutes.

  • constant f/4 is great for keeping your exposure locked in during a shot
  • should balance really nicely on something like a DJI RS 3 Pro gimbal
  • that 135mm reach is plenty for getting tight b-roll from the back of a room Been using the Nikon Z9 for a while and while the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S is a beast for stills, it just isnt smooth enough for zooming during a live take. If you are looking to build out a video rig for this lens, i would definitely look into a SmallRig Cage for Nikon Z9 and maybe a Tiffen 82mm Variable ND Filter to handle the light. Feel free to ask if you need more tips on setting up a video workflow with these Z cameras, i have no complaints with how the system is evolving.

Coming back to this, Mashaelam is spot on about that focal range. I remember shooting my sisters graduation and I was basically running back and forth because I couldnt zoom smoothly enough with my hands. The footage looked like a shaky mess tbh. Having that power zoom on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ is gonna be a lifesaver for getting those slow, cinematic moves without needing a massive rig. Just being able to sit at f/4 and not worry about the exposure shifting while I zoom is a huge win for my workflow. Plus, if it zooms internally, it wont mess up my gimbal balance halfway through a take. TL;DR: Perfect range for solo videographers who want smooth zooms without the hassle.
