Hey everyone,
I'm trying to figure out the best all-around lens to pair with my Nikon D850. I'm currently using a few older primes, but I'm finding I need something more versatile for general shooting. I mostly shoot landscapes and travel photography, but I also like to dabble in portraits and the occasional event.
I'm not necessarily looking for the *absolute* best in any single category, but rather a lens that performs well across a wide range of situations. Sharpness is definitely important, especially given the D850's high resolution, but I also value good build quality and decent low-light performance. I've been eyeing the Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR, but I'm also wondering if something like a 24-70mm f/2.8 from Sigma or Tamron might be a better choice despite the shorter zoom range. I'm open to considering third-party options if they offer excellent value. I'm not a pro, so absolute top-of-the-line isn't a necessity.
So, for someone in my situation, considering versatility, image quality, and a reasonable budget, what would you recommend as the best all-around lens for the D850? Are there any hidden gems I should be aware of?
Been using this for years, no complaints
Hey! I actually had the 24-120mm f/4 VR... honestly, I wasn't blown away on my D850. Sharpness was decent, but not *amazing*. I'd lean towards a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2. Great value and sharper, IMO! Just my 2 cents.
Hey! So, I'm going to throw a slightly different idea into the mix... Have you considered the Nikon 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR? Hear me out! I know it's not f/2.8, and the zoom range isn't as long as the 24-120mm, but honestly, for the price, it's a seriously sharp lens, and it's surprisingly good on the D850.
I've seen them go for around $300-$400 used in excellent condition. It's definitely a step up from a kit lens, and while it's not going to blow you away with bokeh like a prime, it's incredibly versatile. The VR works really well too, which helps in low light situations (though obviously not as much as a faster aperture).
It's way more compact and lighter than either the 24-120 or the 24-70 f/2.8 options, which is a HUGE plus for travel photography, IMO. Plus, with the money you save, you could invest in a really nice prime for those times when you *really* need that shallow depth of field or extra bit of light. A used 50mm f/1.8 or 35mm f/1.8 would be a great complement.
Also, regarding the Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 G2, it's a great lens, no doubt, but it's also quite heavy and bulky. If size and weight are major concerns for travel, the 24-85mm might be a better fit. Just something to think about! Hope this helps!
Hey! I think you're smart to consider all options. Honestly, on a D850, chasing the absolute best sharpness can get expensive *fast*. Since you said you're not a pro, I'd suggest looking at gently used lenses. You can find amazing deals!
Okay, so Option A: Keep your primes and supplement with a cheaper zoom for convenience. Option B: Go for a used Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR. Option C: Hunt for a Sigma or Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 (used, of course!).
The downside of Option A is lens changes. Option B *can* be a bit soft wide open, but stopped down it's pretty good, and VR is super useful for travel. Option C is sharper and faster, but heavier and more expensive, even used.
My pick? I'd try to find a *mint* condition used Nikon 24-120mm f/4 VR. You can probably snag one for a decent price if you're patient. It's a good balance of range, image quality, and cost, especially if you already have primes for when you need *ultimate* image quality. Don't be afraid to buy used; just check the lens thoroughly! Good luck!
