Hey everyone! I finally made the jump to the Nikon D850, and while I’m absolutely loving the incredible resolution and dynamic range, I’m hitting a bit of a roadblock when it comes to lighting. Since the D850 doesn't have a built-in pop-up flash, I’m officially in the market for a reliable external speedlight to complete my kit.

I primarily shoot a mix of fast-paced indoor events and some outdoor portraits where I really need High-Speed Sync (HSS) to balance out harsh sunlight. I’ve been looking closely at the Nikon SB-5000 because of the radio control and cooling system, but that price tag is definitely a bit intimidating. On the other hand, I see so many photographers lately switching to Godox (like the V1 or V860III) because of the lithium batteries and the price point. I’m a little concerned about how well third-party units actually communicate with Nikon’s i-TTL system during critical moments compared to native Nikon glass.

Has anyone here found a "sweet spot" flash for the D850? I’m looking for something that is dependable, won't overheat during a long wedding shoot, and offers consistent exposure. Would you recommend sticking with the Nikon brand for the best compatibility, or is there a third-party option that you trust for professional work?

Ngl, I’ve had issues with third-party sync timing. Strictly suggest the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight - it’s the only way to ensure 100% i-TTL reliability and avoid thermal cutout failures during weddings.

Seconding the recommendation above. Honestly, in my experience the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is the gold standard because of its cooling system—it allows like 100 consecutive shots! But jumping in, I've seen the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon handle HSS well too. - Nikon: Better i-TTL & thermal protection
- Godox: 1.5s recycle time via Li-ion Nikon is way more reliable tho... gl!

Curious about one thing: how often are you actually hitting that thermal limit during your shoots?? Honestly, I've been shooting events for a decade and switched from the pricey Nikon stuff to a much cheaper Godox setup recently. - My current gear cost way less than native units.
- I learned that third-party TTL is actually super reliable nowadays!! Anyway... is the radio control a MUST for ur workflow??
