What's the best speedlight for a Nikon Z9? I'm shooting mostly portraits and have a budget of around $500. Any recommendations?

Just caught up on this thread and there’s a lot of solid info here. Basically, it looks like most folks are suggesting third-party options to get the most bang for your buck, especially since the Z9 can really push a flash to its limits. Here’s the gist of what's been covered:
* Recycle speed is king if you're gonna use the Z9's burst capabilities.
* Heat management is a major factor, especially for outdoor portrait sessions.
* Mastering light shaping might be more important than the brand name on the unit. Tbh, I'm not 100% sure if the latest firmware updates have totally smoothed things out, but IIRC, some people mentioned the Z9 can be a bit finicky with the 'wake-up' signal on certain non-Nikon triggers. Not sure if that’s still a widespread issue or just a random glitch, but it’s probably worth a quick check before you spend your cash. It’s kinda a trade-off between the seamlessness of native gear and the raw value of the alternatives, right? Just be careful with the hot shoe and try not to fry anything during those long summer shoots, haha!

I've used the Godox V1N with my Z9 for a year. Recycles fast, great for portraits. Might want to consider battery costs long-term, though.

Considering the Z9's capabilities, prioritize flash recycle time. The Profoto A1X offers fast recycling; crucial for continuous shooting. Ensure full TTL compatibility for seamless integration. Verify guide number suits your portrait distances. Budget around $1000. Consult a lighting specialist to match flash duration with your desired effects. Be careful of exceeding Z9's sync speed – test thoroughly to avoid banding.

Godox V1 is reliable. Check recycle times; overheating can fry your Z9's hot shoe. Safety first!

Godox V860III-N is fantastic! Reliable TTL, recycle times are amazing, and under $300!

Forget the hype! Check Godox. Their V1 (around $300) gives amazing results, punching way above its price. Read reviews: incredible value and reliability based on user reports!

Before dropping cash, consider learning off-camera flash. Used SB-800s are cheap; trigger them with Godox XPro. Cheaper than new, and you control the light. Seriously, understanding light shaping is more valuable than any speedlight. Over the years, I've seen too many folks buy expensive gear, then leave it on TTL. Take a workshop, or watch YouTube; save your $500 until you've mastered the basics. Trust me on this.

Godox V1. Owned mine 5 years, still happy. No complaints, works well.

Hey! Since you're in Arizona, consider heat. I fried two speedlights shooting midday portraits in direct sun. I'd suggest a Godox V1; recycle times are decent, but more importantly, it's proven reliable for me over 3 years in this climate. Be careful leaving any flash in your car during summer; that's a death sentence!
