Looking to upgrade my street photography setup with a Nikon Z8 and need lens recommendations. I'm torn between the 35mm f/1.8 S and 50mm f/1.2 S for versatility and low light performance. Also considering the 24-70mm f/2.8 S for flexibility, though it's bulkier for street work. What's your go-to street lens on the Z8? How do you balance image quality, size, and discreteness when shooting candid street scenes?
Just picked up the Z8 last month and been testing different glass for street work. Hands down, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S is an excellent choice for this camera. The focal length hits that sweet spot - not too wide, not too tight. The AF motor is smooth and fast to focus, it's also practically silent. This means you can shoot discreetly, which for street photography is an absolute bonus Plus the large f/1.8 aperture setting delivers that sought-after beautiful bokeh when you want to isolate subjects. Been using it daily and it just disappears on the camera - perfect size/weight balance.
I keep coming back to the Nikkor Z 28mm f/2.8 (SE). It’s tiny, cheap, focuses fast, and doesn’t attract attention. On a Z8 it feels almost like a body cap, which is great for walking all day. Not the creamiest bokeh and it vignettes a bit wide open, but for classic 28mm street it’s a winner.
I actually shoot street with the Z 24–70mm f/4 S a lot. It folds compact, is sharp across the range, and paired with the Z8’s IBIS it’s great in low light. You lose the stealth factor versus a small prime, but the flexibility is huge when you’re moving between 24mm environmental shots and 50–70mm candid moments.
NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S. Love it. Wish this Black Friday 2025 will get price dropped.
Like someone mentioned, the 35mm really is that sweet spot for street. I ended up going with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S instead and honestly i'm so happy with it. It's been super reliable for me and just works well every time i'm out. No complaints at all... it feels like a very safe choice that stays out of the way and doesn't draw any attention.
